The Leprechaun's Gift
Carrie Landes

Once upon a time, there lived a greedy princess, who had everything in the
world - except for love. She lived in an ancient castle in Ireland, alone, because
her parents had died many years ago. Her full name was Princess Anne Marie
Roth, but she was called Anne. Her parents had spoiled her with many luxuries
and her favorite one was her garden. Princess Anne loved to walk through her
garden, enjoying the fresh air and the smell of roses.
One day when Anne was strolling through the rose bushes, she
encountered a little leprechaun. She nearly stepped on him and he let loose a
blood curdling scream. This startled Anne, she fell backwards, landing in a pile
of mud under some rose bushes. She was angry and ordered him to leave her
garden at once. He told her his name was Dimitri, and all he wanted was a
single rose. Since roses were Anne’s favorite flowers she replied with a very
harsh “No!” He was appalled by this; she had at least twenty rose bushes and
couldn’t even spare a single rose.
Dimitri exclaimed, “Because of your unkindness I will teach you a lesson
by turning you into an ugly witch. You will stay in this form until you can show
kindness to someone else.”
He then pulled out some magic gold dust and “poof!” Anne turned into an
ugly witch. She ran inside her castle to see what the mean little leprechaun had
done. She turned to the closest mirror to discover her beautiful face had turned
green and was covered with big ugly warts. Her beautiful blonde hair had turned
black and her fingers were long and bony instead of petite and graceful. Anne
ran back outside to find Dimitri, but he was gone. She was embarassed by her
figure and darted off to the woods to hide forever.
Five years passed and it would soon be Anne’s twenty-third birthday. Her
beautiful castle had deteriorated and was overgrown with vines. Weeds had
become the primary plant in her once favorite garden. Due to her ugly
appearance, Anne had moved into the garden shed on her estate and made that
her home. Anne was sad for she knew her birthday was in three days and once
again she would be alone for it.
The following day a family came in a royal carriage. It was adorned in
gold and the family’s clothing was very elegant. The family looked around the
castle and noticed it was vacant, so they decided to restore it and live there.
Anne’s shed was hidden by trees, so luckily it wasn’t discovered. After the royal
carriage departed, Anne ventured from her hidden home. She started searching
for berries, when suddenly the prince of the royal family appeared. Anne told
him to leave her alone, but he wouldn’t leave. He wanted to figure out this
secret witch. Anne attempted to go home, but he followed her. He persisted to
annoy her, so she asked for his name.
He answered, “I’m Prince Henry of the House of Hartford, and you
madam?”
Anne thought quickly so not to give away her real name and simply
replied, “I’m Fran.”
“Is that all?”
“Yes, I am just a poor witch, not royalty like yourself.”
“Well then, I must return to my family.”
“Goodbye, your highness.”
The next day, one day before Anne’s birthday, Prince Henry returned to
the hidden garden shed. He went walking through the garden and ate some
luscious red berries. By the time he arrived at Anne’s shed, he wasn’t feeling
well. He fell unconscious in the weeds outside Anne’s shed.
Upon hearing a disturbance outside, Anne ventured out to investigate.
She found Prince Henry laying in the weeds, barely breathing. Her first thought
was to leave him to die. However, she recalled the leprecahun’s spell, this could
be her chance to regain her beauty.
She bent over his ailing form, and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“I’m not sure, “ he gasped.
“Did you eat anything in the garden?”
“Just some red berries, “ the prince whispered.
Anne’s love of gardening gave her the knowledge to help the prince. He
had consumed poisonous berries, and she could make a drink that would save
his life. She mixed together all kinds of ingredients from her garden. This
created a solution that tasted horrible, but worked instantly. Anne gave it to the
prince. At first, he didn’t trust taking a drink from this horrible creature, but in his
weakened state what other choice did he have. He took a drink and the antidote
began to work immediately.
He looked up at Fran and asked, “How did you know how to make that?”
She answered, “I’m a witch. I know lots of potions.”
The following day, Anne’s birthday, the prince, in his gratitude, invited her
to the Annual Hartford Ball. Anne wanted to go but was an ugly hag and was
afraid of being shunned by everyone. Anne longed for her beauty to return just
for this one night, because the prince was so handsome. She ran to the middle
of the forest and cried. When she awoke, it was evening and Dimitri had
returned. Dimitri had seen how Anne had saved the prince and showed
kindness. He also could see how much Anne liked Prince Henry. So, he
decided she had suffered enough and turned her back into the beautiful princess
she had once been. Anne thanked Dimitri and promised to be kind to all
creatures forever more. Anne hurried to her shed home and peeked in the
window, in its reflection she could see that she was clothed in an elegant dress
that shimmered like the stars in heaven.
Henry arrived to pick up Fran and was confused by this beautiful person
who had replaced her. Anne explained herself and her story and Henry was
very pleased to meet her. He still took her to the ball and they had a wonderful
evening. Then, like most fairy tales they fell in love, and Anne thought to
herself, this is the best birthday gift ever!
