Architects Of Our Own Demise Harvey Kennett
“In the 1960’s we began the search for peace, love and harmony.
4 decades have passed, and some might say we are further from the goal than at any point in human history.
We fight the same wars, the same prejudices, the same inequalities of the human world as we did then, only this time, those we fight are unseen, the prejudices we fight are created for us, and the inequalities we fight are greater now and of our own making.
We have never been more afraid; afraid to leave our homes, afraid for our own safety, afraid of the motives of those who we elect to govern us.
In the 60’s, we looked to the future and swore to learn from the mistakes of the past, and promised never to repeat them.
Something, somewhere broke down. We cannot be certain what it was, but the more we analysed it, the answer rested within us. It was in our psyche, do you understand ?
We are programmed to error. What more can I say ?”
The Divine Being thought upon the case, presented by Arthur Scrimshaw, a Senior Partner of Scrimshaw, Shanks and Wortley, a tax accountants based in Putney.
Arthur added, “We thought we were moving forwards. New technology, new ideas, greater freedoms.”
“Progress ?” said the Divine Being.
“Exactly”, said Arthur.
“Ah…I can see where it all fell through”, said the Divine Being. “Progress….it’s not one of my inventions…the boys downstairs claimed that one long ago.”
“I don’t understand”, said Arthur, “surely progress is good ?”
“”Alas no, dear boy”, said the Divine Being. “Progress means never being satisfied until you have found something better. It is a destructive force, sweeping away all that preceded it with something new.”
“But surely”, gasped Arthur, “Take medicine which saved millions of lives. Communication and air travel which brought us all closer. Agriculture which saved millions from starvation. I could go on.”
“These are your inventions, not mine. Man has been the architect of his own demise", said the Divine Being.
“Please explain “, said Arthur, the last of the human race following the Apocalypse of the Last World War.
The Divine Being looked down for a moment, then looked Arthur square in the eye.
“I never intended you to evolve beyond apes”, said the Divine Being.
