Summer Of My German Soldier (Chapter 22) Kristen Antia
Summer of my German Soldier; Continuous Chapter: 22
I sat in the room very lonely with nothing at all to do. I could only think of Ruth. As I raised my hand to wipe of my tears, I saw the ring. Anton’s ring. The ring Anton gave to me. I started to remember the good laughs we had together. The only question I kept asking myself in my head was, “How could they kill such a good and kind person as Anton?” As I was waiting for the moment for somebody to call me and release me, I heard footsteps approaching my room. I jumped up excitedly, only to see, Miss Laud. I was waiting for the wonderful releasing news when she says. “Patricia, you have a visitor.” I couldn’t think who it could be. “Ruth came a couple of weeks ago, my parents hate me, and they would never let Sharon come alone.” As I was walking down my room, I saw Charleen Madlee. “Hello, Patty! How are you today?” she said. I nodded and said with a surprised look on my face. “Fine thanks and you?” “Very good thank you.” “Now girls don’t take long.” Said Miss Laud, and left us alone. “You won’t imagine the surprise I have for you.” said Charleen. “Is it good or bad?” I said. “Extremely good.” Said Charleen. “Then don’t just stay there quite Charleen, Tell me, tell me, tell me? “Settle down Patty.” Charleen started to open her purse and take out a little yellow paper. “It is a note from Anton written for one if his relatives.” The note read:
“…I met this young girl who is so sweet and caring to me. Her name is Patricia Ann Bergen, but I call her ‘Patty’. She was the one that hid me by the garage room during the war. I gave her the ring grandpa gave to me, because of all the good things she did for me. If I could only tell her what she really means to me and that, that ring means our forbidden marriage in the future…”
“Where’s the rest of it?” I said. “I don’t know,” said Charleen. “But here he is saying that he meant something to you. Don’t you think that’s important?” I stared at the ring for hours until Miss Laud came in and shouted with anger, “Five more minutes, girls.” As Charleen left the room, she shook my hand and dropped a tiny paper in it.
As I was going back to my room, I started to read the note. It said:
“Excited about the news? Well, now I can take you over to one of Anton’s relatives. I know I shouldn’t do this but as I am your friend, I have to, and I have a plan for you to escape and you must tell no one at all. (See me by your window at 3 am.) Your Friend: Charleen Madlee P.S. Please burn this NOW!
Friends? Meet Anton’s relatives? Plan? Was I reading right? I couldn’t believe Charleen was doing this. For ME!
There was no slower weekend than this one. Finally, it was Sunday 2 am. I couldn’t wait one more hour. I kept on looking out the window waiting for Charleen. Finally, 2:59-3:00am. I heard a knock on my window. I climbed out of the window and went off in her car. “I don’t know how to thank you. You are so good to me. Please tell me how I could ever thank you?” “Don’t worry,” said Charleen. “What are friends for, right?” “Right!” I said.
We drove for hours until we got to my home. “What are we doing home?” I asked. “My parents won’t want to see me.” “Just go in and talk to them.” “What will I say when they ask me what happened…? I mean… with the jail thing?” “Just go and talk to them Patty.” I got out of the car and started walking toward the house holding Anton’s ring for good luck. As I got close to the house, I heard people yelling, “NAZI LOVER, NAZI LOVER!” As I rang the doorbell I kissed the ring and hid it. My dad opened surprised, “What the hell are you doing here young lady? Aren’t you supposed to be in jail?” “Don’t worry dad,” I said, “They let me visit you guys, but, only today because I really missed you.” “You are all full of crap aren’t you?”, said my dad. As I was letting myself inside the house, my dad pushed me back. “And what do you think you are doing?” “Well, I live here, and I want to see mom and Sharon.” “Well, they aren’t here”, he said. “They are out shopping and remodeling the upstairs room.” “You mean my room?”, I said. “I can’t believe it, you guys are remodeling the room for me! This is so…” “Your room”, my dad interrupted. “Are you crazy? That is our new playroom.” “And what about me? Where am I going to sleep?” “Not in this house.” And he closed the door on me. I yelled from outside the door, “Could you at least give this to Sharon for me, please?” I kissed the envelope and placed it under the door. “Please tell her that I love her and miss her tons!”
I started walking towards the car crying with no breath at all. “What happened to you?” said Charleen. “My father…” I said sobbing. “… doesn’t love me. He through me out of the house. And my room. They are turning it into a playroom. Now where am I going to live?” “You can live with me!” “Thanks” I said, “you really are a good friend. Where would I be without you?” “Hold on I have a surprise for you?” “What is it?” I said. “Hold on just wait.
We went over to Charleen’s house and on the next morning, we were on a plane going who knows where. Charleen wouldn’t tell me, she even had me blind folded. Then we landed, got on a cab and went to this person Sam’s house. I have no idea who it is and of course Charleen wouldn’t tell me. Finally, Charleen took the blind fold off and and told me, “Now here is the big surprise. Do you know who lives here?” “Beats me.” Sam. Sam Reiker.” “Oh my God, You mean he has something to do with Anton?” “Yep”, said Charleen. “What am I doing here. Am I in Germany? Oh my God, I can’t believe it. Thank you. Thank you very much.” “Well, go ahead and ring the door bell.” Said Charleen. “Are you crazy?” I told her. “They have been expecting you. I have been here a couple of times investigating Anton and his family. Sam is his uncle. Go on, ring the doorbell. I will be waiting for you here.” “How do they know it will be me?” I said. “Remember the little yellow piece of paper I gave to you?” “Yeah?” I said. “Well, Sam gave it to me. You see, he knows who you are and he knows everything about the ring. He knows it would of meant “marriage” in your future. They want you to stay with them because of what you did to Anton. He would of wanted that.”
She pushed me towards the door, rang the doorbell and went back to the car. I looked at the ring and kissed it one last time. The door opened and this couple hugged me with emotion. “Hi. I am Patricia Ann Bergen Reiker, Patty. From that moment on, I was never as happy.

"You write beautifully, Kristen. There is nothing raw about your work because you write it with such feeling. Your English is impecabble and puts mine to shame! Your stories have an optimistic beauty even when writing about sad things which I think is very lovely. My work in contrast, has a slightly depressing quality to it. " -- Harriet Nicholas, UK.
