ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
I was born in South Arica and started writing early. After school I fell victim to the savage travel bug and have visited more than ten countries in my years abroad. I spend my free time writing and in paranoic fear of becoming the socially withdrawn individual that I am sure I have already become. Why ink on paper would be such better companions than humans only us writers will ever know, or even care to wonder about. [February 2004]

The ride had been good. We got out of the car and
stood ankle-deep in the sand.
"Were are you going to?" It was the night that
spoke.
We exchanged glances, highlighted by the dim light
from the boardwalk lamps.
"To the ocean" we replied.
Had Night had a head it would have turned
it to the hush of the waves breaking on the sand
five meters away.
"But you are already there?" Night seemed confused.
I didn't understand, how could Night be confused?
I explained anyway.
"My friend and I wish to go the the ocean. Not the
beach."
Night considered this. He appeared to be patient,
at least.
"Both of you?"
At this it was me that gave some thought before
replying.
"We always do. Whenever there is light, anyways."
Night smiled; at me, at the boardwalk lamps and my
shadow.
"Go then," he said.
I swam like I never had before. When I reached as
far as I could go, I turned
and looked back. And on the beach was my car,
black illuminated in the dark, and Night with my
shadow, smiling most gentle. I smiled back,
and swam on. For the first time I was alone,
and my journey had just begun.
