A Perfect Crime P J Francis
I do not know how long I had lain in the bushes, watching. Time had ceased as far as I was concerned. I wore no watch, they had not allowed me any luxuries in the laboratory where I had spent all my life. I sighed deeply, I was not a patient person. How much longer before she showed up?
A loud slamming caught my attention. Ah, there she was-perfection in every way. I watched her as she bounced cheerily down the steps, her long blonde hair flowing mischievisously behind her. She glanced back towards the house, and waved one hand, I could see the silver of her car keys jutting from her palm. I had to make my move soon, this was the perfect opportunity, and one that I had waited most of my life for.
I stepped from the bushes and slowly walked up to her. The look of surprise on her face was exhilarating. I swept my blonde hair back from my face with a gloved hand, and I reached out to her, firmly taking the keys out of her trembling hand. She offered no resistance, I had expected that, all she could do was stare at me, her pretty sky blue eyes wide open in fear.
“Who are you?” she stammered.
“I am you, and you are me” I replied in an identical voice.
“But…you…look…like me!”
“Yes, Jennie, I know. Its all inconsequential. Step in to the car, if you please”
I opened the door of her red Jeep Cherokee. “Ladies first…” I gave her a slow lazy wink, the exception was that my blue eyes sparkled in anticipation, while hers widened in confusion. The anticipation…I could feel the same rush of blood through my veins, as I had when I had escaped the lab. The same blood lust. It coursed with a power of its own, and I welcomed the slight red haze that clouded my eyes. It felt good. Powerful even, and I remembered with vicious delight the way that the night-watch man's jugular had opened under my stolen knife. A delicious red spray, and then…freedom.
I pushed her into the car, then slammed the door. I raced to the other side and got behind the wheel. I knew how to drive: they had taught me that at least, but there were other, unpleasant things that they made me do. I shuddered, and glancing across, I saw Jennie do the same. I smiled at her in a kind of ‘Hey! We are all mates here!’ type of way. She didn’t smile back. I figured she was not as happy to see me, as I was of her.
I started the car, and drove slowly, not to cause any alarm to the neighbors. The scenery passed by lazily, and I gazed, a happy smile on my face. Soon…I thought to myself, Oh, but soon…
“Where are you taking me?” I heard my passenger ask in a breathless voice.
“It won’t be far, dear Jennie. Just think, all your problems will be over…Soon”
We drove for an hour in silence. I glanced at my captive, she made no sound, no movement, the only thing discernable was the way her hands clutched at each other, the skin taut, knuckles shining white as panic gripped her. That was fine, I couldn’t stand to hear her whine, silence was far better.
I turned off the road, and drove up to the large dark barn that had been my home for over two weeks. I shoved the car door open “As you can see, we are in the back of beyond. There's no point in screaming, hell” I laughed, “There's no-one here to hear you…” I winked at her again.
I pulled open her door, and yanked her out by the arm. She stumbled, I’m not sure if over a rock, but at the time I thought she was going to do a runner on me.
“Oops a daisy!” I gripped her arm tighter, my black leather gloves creaking as the skin tightened beneath. “My, that was careless!”
She whimpered as I dragged across the rough ground. I shoved my hand in my pocket, and slowly pulled out a pistol, a legacy bequeathed to me by the night-watch man, and smiling, I thrust the gun in her side. “No sudden movements now, Jennie”
I think I will always remember the look on her face, as I put the gun into her sweating palm. Her blue eyes shined at me through her tears, and I reached across, and caressed the strands of loose blonde hair that had fallen raggedly to the side of her pale face.
“Not long now, dear-heart” I cooed gently too her, “Not long at all…”
I folded her hand around the pistols black handle.
“Can I ask why?” she sobbed “And how…”
I looked at her, and for the first time in my life, I felt compassion. “You donated your eggs to medical research, when you couldn’t conceive…”
“That was ages ago…they swore that the eggs were destroyed…I managed to conceive naturally…Benjamin was born…”
“Yes, I know all that” I said impatiently. “I know all there is to know about you and yours…”
She looked at me, confusion etched on her pained white face.
“…The Internet is a wonderful thing… so much you can learn!” I replied laughing. “Well, I am genetically your match…identical in every way! You are my ticket out of this misery. They will find a body, and figure that it is mine! We are genetically identical. They will never know…you are my perfect crime”
I folded my gloved hand over hers, and gently moved the guns muzzle to her temple.
Later, I complimented myself on a job well done. One bang was all it took. I walked up the steps to my new home, the keys jangling in my now bare hand.
The door opened before I had inserted the key. I stood on the step with a goofy smile on my lips.
“Jennie!” he said to me as he embraced me. “How did the shopping trip go?”
“It went well,” I said smiling as I heard my new name. I reached up and kissed him. “How’s our little soldier been…”
“Mumma!” the boy screeched as he saw me.
I bent down, and allowed him a huge hug. He tugged at my hand, and I walked into my new home, with my new family crowding around me.
You see, the perfect crime…
