Love Of The Mountains Or So They Thought
Lucy Midnight

"Grandma what’s this"? "It’s the stories that your great grandmother wrote while she was in her teens". "Love of the Mountain or so they thought? What does that mean"? "It means they thought it was love but it really wasn’t". "Why wasn’t it"? "Well let’s read the story and find out. It was a beautiful day in the middle of the summer. That was the day I met Tom". Tom was a talkative, strong, kindhearted man that was in the way of my father constantly. He was tall, dark, and handsome but clumsy. But no ones perfect and that’s why I fell in love with him. The only problem was, was that I had an older sister that he always had his eyes on. If only Amy would disappear. If Amy disappeared then Tom would be all mine and I wouldn’t share him if he were. I know I sound selfish but Amy hogs him. Yet I know for a fact that she likes the boy down in town. Ryan that’s who it is. I saw her kissin’ em one day. Of course daddy didn’t see her and neither did mama. If only Tom had seen it then he would be heart broken and he would fall right into my arms. One day I went swimming and I had stripped down to nothing and from underneath me I felt a rubbing and I thought it was a fish. But then out of nowhere popped up Tom. I was so scared I got out of the water and ran up a tree. He yelled at me to get down from there. I wouldn’t so he threatened to come up there and get me. I sassed at him and he came up there naked and threw me into the water. He then jumped after me because I didn’t come up after the little toss. After a while I came up and he lifted me the rest of the way out of the water exposing me. I cursed at him and told him to put me down. He didn’t do it so I kicked him in the jaw. He then put me down. Once I was back in the water I tended to his jaw. I touched it gently. He looked me deep in the eyes then he kissed me. I was a 14-year old country girl; I didn’t know how to kiss. I just tried to go with it but I couldn’t. I felt something poke me under the water and I simply ignored it. Apparently I wasn’t the only one that had feelings in this relationship. When we parted for air he said sorry. I told him that I didn’t know how to kiss. He showed me how to kiss and he then asked if that was my first kiss. I told him the truth and he smiled. He then kissed me again this time for what seemed like forever. He even stuck his slimy little tongue into my mouth. I didn’t like that but I couldn’t tell him that. When I got home I wrote in my journal about the kiss and how wonderful yet awful it was. It made me feel used and dirty. The weird thing was although it was nasty, I liked it and I think he enjoyed it more than I did. I really don’t know why he would enjoy kissin a little girl like me but that’s his deal not mine. "Grandma how come she is a brat"? "Let’s keep reading Billy". Amy and mama were mad when I got home because I’d gone skinny dipping without them. They loved to go skinny-dipping but I didn’t tell them I was going. I got a good whippin for that from Amy. She told me that I shouldn’t have gone down there without her because Tom could have seen me. "Boys back then weren’t supposed to see your naked embrace until after you were happily married. So that’s why Amy thrashed her". For the next few weeks Tom and I had a country romance. You know we’d sneak off to the lake and skinny dip, then we’d kiss here and there. We were inseparable after that. If we were apart we were either sleeping or working. I wrote in my journal often about Tom. I don’t know if he ever thought about me while we were apart but I sure thought about him. I couldn’t imagine my life without Tom. I guess you could say I loved him. I loved him up until the day I saw them. I saw Amy and Tom on the porch laughing and then I saw it. They kissed. I thought about everything Tom and I had done and it meant nothing to me within a few seconds. I was so furious that I threw the plate of cookies I’d made for Tom at them. "Gail wait!", they both screamed after me. I ran, I ran as fast as I could and Tom finally caught up to me at the river. He was running so fast he bumped me into the water trying to stop. He tried to help me out but I wouldn’t let him. Every time he reached his hand in I threatened to pull him in. The last time he reached his hand in I pulled him in. He tried to kiss me to try and make it better but I turned away. He pleaded with me to forgive him. I told him no because he was only using me to get to my sister. He tried to tell me that she kissed him he didn’t kiss her. I got out of the water and leaned over to tell him off one last time. But instead I got one of the most amazing kisses I’d ever gotten but I broke it off. He climbed the water and started the kiss again. He started to lay me down but I refused to let him. He put all his might on me. He then raised up and ripped the top of my favorite dress and I threw him off of me. On the way home I ran to the handsomest man in the entire world. It was Ryan, the man of my sisters dreams. But instead of him kissing her, he kissed me. I mean this was a full-blooded kiss nothing like a peck on the cheek this was a real kiss. Yes this really happened I’m not just imagining it. I thought it was till Amy walked out and asked what he was doing. He replied that she had cheated on him so it his revenge. She threw a tantrum but didn’t do anything to me. After that Ryan and I became a couple and we never split up. We got married and had three beautiful kids. The only thing I regret about that year was the fact that I wasted so much time with Tom. He made my life horrible. Ryan made everything better. He allowed me to get back at Amy and he wasn’t quite as old as Tom Thumb was. I gave him a new nickname, I now call Ryan my big teddy bear. Every time I call Ryan that he just laughs and turns his head to look out the window. Sometimes I get the feeling that Ryan’s just using me but then we make love and then I know he’s not. "Grandma what happened to Amy and Tom and what happened to Gail and Ryan"? "Well it’s time for you to go to bed. Go on Billy". "Okay Grandma". Later that night Billy snuck down stairs and was going to read what happened next but the final page of the story book had been torn out. He was so mad he slammed the book back shut and went straight to bed. His grandma was standing in the doorway while he did all of this. When he went to bed she said quietly to herself, "And that’s our little secret mom".
