The Ballerina

Mary is 9 years old and loves ballet. She is learning ballet in an old ballet school with a 10 other little girls and an instructor who is very strict. The ballet school also has an auditorium. All the girls had to take turns one day to dance to a song from the Nutcracker Suite, called The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. When it was Mary’s turn, she messed up in the middle even though she tried her best and the teacher Mrs Collins scolded her. Mary was very sad and after the lesson, she went to the auditorium and waited for her mother to pick her up. She felt like she was being watched and when she turned around, she thought she saw a little girl in old-fashioned ballet clothes dance into the shadows of the curtains. Then she felt a cold wind and she felt uncomfortable. Then her mother came to pick her up.
Another day, Mary came to the ballet school and she saw some of her friends there. They went into the auditorium first but Mary remembered the strange experience she had a few days ago. While the other girls talked and laughed and shared gossip, Mary felt like she was being watched. Then Mary asked one of her friends if she believed in ghosts. One little girl started telling a story that this building once caught fire many years ago and after the fire had been put out, they found the charred remains of a little girl. Mary started to feel scared and she had a feeling that maybe there was a ghost of a little girl in the ballet school. When more of the students came, they decided to go to the locker rooms to change their clothes.
That night, Mary went on the Internet to find out more information about what had happened in the history of the ballet school. She found out that the auditorium of the ballet school was burned down by some kind of electrical problem. She also found out that a little girl was on the stage when it happened and that a large lamp that caught fire landed on top of her and she was crushed, but she did not die from that. It was said that she had died from the smoke and, eventually the fire consumed her dead body. Mary was feeling very uneasy about going back to the ballet school now.
The next day, her mother was driving her to the ballet school but she did not want to go because she was scared. She told her mother about the story of the little girl who died in the ballet school while she was practicing and now she was haunting the auditorium but her mother said that ghosts are not real and that it was just her imagination. The dead do not haunt the living. That was the message from Mary’s mother. Mary went into the ballet school and she noticed that she was the first one there. She went to the locker room and she began to change her clothes and then she felt something cold in the air. When she looked up, she saw a little girl smile but it was a sad smile. The little girl danced away like a ballerina. She was wearing ballet clothes. Mary screamed and that’s when Mrs Collins came in.
Once again, the girls were going to dance to the song of The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and each of the girls had to take turns dancing. Once it was Mary’s turn, she messed up again and this time even worse and Mrs Collins was very disappointed. She was told to chill out in the locker room for a while. But she left the locker room and hid herself in the backstage of the auditorium until everyone had left except Mrs Collins, who was probably in her office. Very soon, her mother would come and pick her up, so she went to the stage and tried to dance to the song, which she played in her mind, but she was having difficulty. She heard a little girl’s voice, telling her that she should not push herself so hard. The ghost of the little girl ballerina appeared and looked very pretty and smiled a lonely smile at Mary.
The CD player began to play by itself. It played the song of The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the ghost of the little girl ballerina began to dance around the stage very beautifully and gracefully. Mary was in awe as she watched. But then suddenly, the ghost stopped and looked very scared and looked up. Mary asked what was wrong and the ghost said that something very bad happened that made her very scared. She asked for the little ghost girl’s name and she said her name was Natalie. Mary said that something must have happened to her at that point while she was dancing. Something had fallen on top of her and crushed her. Natalie looked very sad and she confirmed that. Suddenly, Mary’s mother called out and Mary turned around to see her mother. When Mary was about to say goodbye to Natalie, she had already disappeared. Mary was puzzled but she left with her mother, but she definitely wanted to meet Natalie again the next time she came.
Natalie was also 9 years old when she died. A few days later, Mary came to the ballet school very early and she sat on the stage with Natalie beside her. Both of them were in ballet attire. Natalie told Mary that she always wanted to dance for people but she never got the chance and Mary said that she wished she were better so that she could finally no longer mess up while dancing to Sugar Plum Fairy ballet song. Mary suggested that Natalie dance for her and that Mary will be the audience who will watch her dance and Natalie was very happy. Mary started to play the song and made herself the audience to Natalie’s performance, but near the middle, Natalie was scared and looked up. Mary assured her that nothing would happen to her because the auditorium was fixed now. Natalie asked her to dance with her but Mary was reluctant because she did not feel she was good enough.
Mary and Natalie danced to the song again and they matched every step and every move perfectly. Natalie told her that she believed in Mary and that she could dance very well. Mary told her that there was no longer anything to be scared of and that she will be her audience to perform for. They continued to dance while a few of the other ballet students came into the auditorium and were awed by what they saw. Some of them looked scared. Mary was dancing with a ghost. In fact, Mary danced perfectly and Natalie was no longer scared. When the song was done, the other little girls began to applaud them slowly at first. Mary and Natalie bowed to them. Natalie winked at Mary and smiled a happy smile and then danced away and disappeared.
The teacher Mrs Collins had the students dance to the song of The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy one more time and when it was Mary’s turn, she had a feeling this was going to be bad. Mary looked into the corner of the backstage area and saw Natalie wave and smile at her. Natalie told her that she would do very well. Mary began to dance to the song and to the surprise of all the other little girls and Mrs Collins, Mary danced perfectly, beautifully, and gracefully. Mrs Collins was very glad this time and Mary said that she someone was very helpful to her. When asked who it was who was very helpful to her, Mary said it was Natalie. Some of the girls asked who Natalie was. Mary just smiled and said that she was a friend.
