The Rich Little Chipmunk John C Popiel
As Mike pulled into his friend Joe’s driveway
in his souped-up Civic Hatchback that he’d spent
thousands on, he found a five dollar bill on his
hot, black dashboard. Today was the big game:
the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Green Bay Packers.
Mike followed his team, the Cowboys,
passionately, and you couldn’t alter his loyalty
to them if you tried. Mike had the jersey,
home and away, of every Cowboy’s player since
1990. He walked into Joe’s house, five dollar
bill in pocket, confident his team was going to
win tonight. Joe and Mike plopped down on Joe’s
couch, Cheez-its in hand, and turned on ESPN.
The game started and by half-time, the Packers
were up 14-6. During the half-time show Mike
and Joe “replayed” some of the highlights of the
first half of the game, got some sodas, and sank
into Joe’s couch once again. The game ended,
with the score of 21-20, Packers. Mike coughed
up his five dollar bill and gave it to Joe.
The bet had been simple: If the Packers won,
Mike gave Joe a five, and vice versa.
Unfortunately for Mike, he no longer had five
dollars cash.
Joe got up Monday morning, half sleep-walked to
his dresser, put on his suit for work and saw
the five dollar bill he won. He nonchalantly
plucked the bill from his dresser and put it
in his pocket, maybe for a soda at work. He
went to his kitchen, fiddled around with his
leaking coffee pot, and finally got some coffee.
He opened his garage door, got in his old, but
clean, raised Toyota Tacoma truck, and drove off
to work. Joe was never late for work, no matter
how many Policemen pulled him over for speeding.
Joe got to work just as he finished his coffee,
and went up to his office. Joe was the manager
of a company that gave people loans and
mortgages. He sat down in his leather chair,
and pulled a pen from his pocket. Little did
he know his five dollar bill came out with his
pen. It fluttered to the ground right beside his
desk. After about ten minutes, Joe was hot and
turned on his mini-fan. This caused the bill to
be blown outside his office where, with much
surprise, one of his associates picked it up.
They called him Big Ben, and the name said it
all. Ben was about 6’8”, and because of his
size, was rather clumsy. That was why he always
blocked and didn’t run in football.
Ben went back to his office, feeling luck in the
air. Since he’d forgotten his usual liter of
Mountain Dew, he’d now be able to buy one. Ben
worked for Joe, but wasn’t planning to for long.
Ben had big dreams. He’d wanted to play for some
big team, maybe the Tampa Bay Bucs, or someone
else. But now…it seemed he’d never be an
All-American MVP lineman. He’d just be a
regular officeman. His lunch break was in five
minutes, and he’d done very little work. He
worked furiously, which he was good at when
needed, and got done what he usually did before
lunch. He went to lunch, but decided not to buy
his usual liter of Mountain Dew. Several hours
later, Ben finished work with a sigh of relief
and went home.
He woke up Saturday morning, decided he was going
for a hike, packed his bag, and saw his five
dollar bill. He stuffed it in one of the
backpack pockets rather lazily, so nearly half
of it was sticking out, and set out for the
woods. After about an hour of hiking, Ben sat
down on a giant log and ate his packed sandwich.
While he was eating, a small, curious chipmunk
plucked the fluttering bill from the pocket of
Ben’s backpack. The chipmunk, feeling mighty
proud of his prize, chattered loudly. Ben
clumsily swung around, falling off his log,
dropping his sandwich, and landing in it. He
looked up to see the chipmunk’s tail and a
corner of his five dollar bill scurry into a
hole in a tree, twenty feet up. The chipmunk
tore the prized five dollar bill into tiny
pieces, and put it in his nest to keep warm.
