My Birthday Treat Mungo Faust
She made me so angry! Sat there with a detached expression on her face, she was almost enough to put me off my food, and that says it all because I like my food and I have a hearty appetite.
But honestly, she just sat there not saying a word; I asked her with a nervous laugh if it was anything that I had done, but I got ignored. She was just downright rude, and I don’t feel that I deserved that after all that I had done for her.
Six months we had been going out together, and in all that time, she never had to pay for anything. Food, drinks, excursions. You name it and I paid for it. Not that I objected. It was my pleasure, after all, I felt that she deserved the best.
We also had a lot of fun. Generally she is really good company and she normally has a wicked sense of humour which is what attracted me to her in the first place. That and her eyes. Beautiful eyes that came alive when she spoke. Cerulean blue eyes that seemed to hold the secrets of the universe and the twinkling of a zillion stars. I had never seen eyes like them before and I fell so deeply in love with them.
In retrospect, I think they were why I constantly took her out to eat. My male ego was bolstered by the looks we would get as we walked into a restaurant or bar. I would watch the facial expressions as they caught her beauty, and feel proud that I was the man who was courting the owner of the ‘eyes that mesmerised‘.
I was never like that with previous girlfriends. In fact, quite the opposite. I nearly always insisted that we ate at home, but this one was different. It is probably why our relationship has lasted so long. The others were rarely around for more than a week or so, but I never took it personally.
Now it looks like we are over now. I did my best to make it last as long as I could, but her attitude is definitely hostile now, so there’s no going back. It’s almost over. She won’t even speak to me.
As well as angry, I feel sad. It was my birthday and the first time that we had decided to eat at home together, and as it was a special occasion, I cooked.
Through the stony silence, somehow I managed not to let her spoil my enjoyment of the meal, although she refused to even taste it, and retained her dead pan hateful expression.
I looked deep into her eyes. The life and sparkle had left them, the secrets of the universe they held slowly became a myth and the zillion stars began extinguishing themselves one by one.
On a lighter note though, their beautiful blue colour were brought out superbly by the bed of cous cous and light balsamic dressing on which I presented them, and can I say they tasted every bit as good as they looked.
As for her, thankfully she won’t be with me tomorrow for dinner as I don’t think her heart would be in it.
But then again - it might.
