A Night At The Cineplex
Skyler Drevan

The movie starts promptly at eight fifteen so I must arrive at least thirty minutes earlier in order to secure a good seat. Before the movie starts, traditionally is when the movie-goers head down to the food stand and order some goodies to enjoy while watching the flick. This evening, the line was particularly long as a woman held up the line while she ordered more food and snacks than anyone I had ever seen before in twenty years of movie going experience.

“I’ll have a large goobers, twizzlers, chocolate mints, extra large popcorn, large skittles, large ju ju bees, two hotdogs, an extra large nacho cheese and, of course, a diet coke.” Was this lady kidding me with this? Her bill totaled over fifty dollars. I had never seen anyone spend so much money at the theater in my life. You would think that the ten bucks that the movie industries get from us would be enough. No, now she wants to thin her wallet and fatten her waist. More power to her. You go girl!

Finally it’s my turn to order but I only have a few minutes before the ever present coming attractions start and I haven’t even held my seat yet. “I’ll just have a small popcorn and a small Pepsi.” Sure sir, the sweet college girls says to me as she takes my order. Most likely she is working her way through college. I respect that. She flashes her smile at me that captivate me until she opens her mouth again. “OK, sir that’ll be ten dollars and thirty five cents. “What!?” I was stunned at how the prices have gone up since I last went to the movies, three weeks ago! “You’ve got to be kidding me.” But she was far too serious. I was running late so I just whipped out my twenty and paid. With ten minutes until the movie starts, I sprinted to the theater; the packed movie theater.

Oh lord, all the seats are full. There seems to be no good seats. Ideally in a movie theater, people like to sit either in the middle row or near the aisles for easy exits. Or, if you are there with a partner, you’d rather be in the back for safe making out sessions. I miss those days dearly. Ahh, to be eighteen again. In any event, the coming attractions have started. As many movie goers know, the time the movie is supposed to start, it never does. Why, well because we must be punished for wanting a time out on the town. How do they punish us, well, they (the industry) cannot just let us enjoy a movie, no, they must hit us with twenty-five minutes of coming attractions. Most of them are of silly advertisements for Pepsi or movies that I have no interest in anyway. But they must try to muster as much money out of you as possible.

Finally the movie has started, and unfortunately so has the talking between the young ladies who are seated directly behind me. That is just what I needed. I was just thinking to myself that I need some commentary from two film critics while I am watching the film. I wasn’t satisfied with the quietness of the theater at all. Sometimes I feel that I have a huge sign on my back that says “annoy me, please.”

Midway through the movie, a child—who must be three days old—decided that he isn’t ready to sit for two hours and enjoy a movie. I mean why should he? The amount of blood and guts here would make an adult cringe. Hell, mother of the year brought little “I wanna cry my ass off tonight” with her so that I would now have no chance of enjoying myself. After three and a half minutes of torturous grunts from that little boy, mommie dearest decided to take him outside. Peace, peace at last? No!

When I was finally relaxed enough to enjoy what was left of this movie, a cellular phone goes off. And it wasn’t just a regular phone ring, perish the thought. It had to be the kind of ring that continues the jingle until the bozo that left it on decides that we have had enough and answers it. Does this human hemorrhoid leave the theater as he answers the phone? No! He stands up in the back of the theater—near to my seat—and belts out his whole life story in my ear. Do I need to know of his pressing engagement tonight or that his daughter is being treated for an infection? Do I need to know that his boss remarried or that his co-worker, Bob is on vacation in Malibu?

I was about to scream but couldn’t. When I opened my mouth to yell at the top of my lungs, my seat began to pull back. When I turned, I saw that one of the lovely ladies who just can’t help themselves stop yakking behind me decided to use my chair as leverage to get out of theirs. I begin to lean so far back that I almost feel I am going to be catapulted out of my seat. Hey, at least one of the stooges was gone. Now maybe, just maybe I can enjoy the movie that I spent ten bucks to see.

You have got to be kidding me, right? No way, this is not happening. Is that, was that, am I reading the ending credits? No!!! I missed the whole movie?! Are you serious? You mean cell phone guy, talking pigeons and baby cries made me miss this movie?

That’s it! No more movies for me. I’m finally going to invest in a DVD player.
