Not to long after Christmas I found my self in the Atlanta airport as I looked around, I saw all these people standing around in DCU’s (Desert Combat Uniform) But there was one that really caught my attention he looked about 18 or 19. As I observed more, I saw that he was in the Army! His mother and father were both there with him. I tried not to stare but there was just some thing about him that wouldn’t let me go! So I continued watching he looked like he was waiting for something other than his flight as I watched and waited my self I started to put little bits and pieces together he was in fact 19yrs old and on his way to Baghdad. I heard his mother keep repeating to him you are to young for this, you are my baby boy, I don’t want you to go over and over she said these phrases as she sat there crying she couldn’t control her self she just looked so lost finally I saw a great big smile come across the young mans face as a young woman approached with a baby in her arms! He said hi. I didn’t think you were coming. As her voice cracked you could tell she had been crying as she replied “I love you don’t ever doubt that but I wasn’t going to show up here today I couldn’t stand the thought of you getting on that plane and the ache that I was going to have in my heart I would never choose to put myself in that type of pain. Then I realized that this wasn’t about me and I was being selfish plus I knew you would want to see your daughter one last time before you left.” His eyes filled up with tears as he said thank you and as he kissed both his young wife and Daughter on the forehead a loud voice came over the speaker “now boarding flight . . . ” He said that’s me time to go! His mother threw her arms around him as did his father! He hugged them back and as he walked away the young woman called back to him. The man turned she handed the baby to his mother as they walked back to each other! He was crying but yet seemed happy she was also crying but she looked so sad! I heard her say why! Why are you doing this? What he said next made me cry! He looked her in the eyes and told her I do this because I want too not because I have to! I do this to fight for the ones who can’t fight for themselves! I do this so that our daughter can grow up in a land that is free and will never have to worry about things like 9/11 happening again! I stopped listening after that because I didn’t have to hear any more to know that statement alone changed my life fore you see I am also in the military and I was on my way to an overseas location and at the time was unhappy that I had to go now I thank my lucky stars that I am here instead of where that soldier is and I pray every night for his safe return to his wife and child. Yeah I miss my family and I miss America but at least I know that I get to come home in a couple of years and he left not knowing when or if he was coming home and it is to him and others like him out there that I want to say thank you! To the ones that go in fighting blindly to ensure that we back in the home land stay safe and for those who support the military I also thank you because you make my job worth doing every day and for those who don’t support the military and what we are doing I believe that you should take a look around you and see the freedom that you have and rethink your reasons for criticizing!

"poinent story, well told. i, for one, greatly appreciate the men and women on the ground (and air). following orders that sometime don't seem to make sense, doing what they were trained to do, underpaid and sometimes underapreciated. it's an experience that will help you the rest of your life. good luck." -- just a guy.
