How Joe C. Lost His Finger A Panos
Joe C. lost his left pointer finger when he rode his bike into a parked car’s side view mirror. He was eight years old at the time. The bike he was riding was a ’94 mongoose. It was a racing bike not a mountain bike, so it didn’t have the handle breaks; rather, to stop it, you had to pedal backwards. Actually, it didn’t allow you to pedal backwards. What it did was just make the bike come to a grinding halt, leaving a long skid mark along the pavement. Mountain bikes couldn’t leave skid marks like racing bikes left skid marks. Mongoose bikes left especially long skid marks. But, to leave big skid marks you also had to have good quality asphalt. If the blacktop wasn’t black enough, but more of a gray shade, one could not expect to leave a good-sized skid mark on it. This road, Evergreen Lane, had nice dark asphalt. The company that laid it out was Bellshi Landscaping and Paving. Its owner was Fran Murray. Murray was not her original maiden name, she married a lawyer named William and inherited his last name. Her maiden name was that of her father’s, which of course was Bellshi. Francesca Bellshi was the first daughter of John Bellshi. John was a World War two veteran where he served in a tank division. It was only fitting that after the war he would start and run a business that had dozens of huge machines. When he died in ’89, he left the business to his daughter. Fran also had kids, three sons. In ’94, they were eighteen, sixteen, and ten. The ten year old also had a bike. He had a Pacific mountain bike with 18 gears. Joe C’s bike only had one gear, but it was the one he asked his father to get him for his birthday the year before. Joe C. didn’t ask for any specific color, but his dad got him the dark green one. Dark green, however, was not the most popular color of Mongoose bikes in ’93. That honor was bestowed upon the color black, followed by red, and then dark green. Other colors that you could have selected were white, gray, yellow, blue, midnight blue, and pink for the girls. Midnight blue is a weird name for a color. Think about it for a second. What color is the sky when it’s midnight? It isn’t any shade of blue, it’s black. But you can’t call the color black “midnight black”, that just wouldn’t make sense. How can the color black be darker than it already is? It can’t be. You can make blue darker, as you can make any color a darker shade, but the term “midnight” shouldn’t apply to any color. As I said before, it could only apply to the color black, which as I also stated before, wouldn’t make sense. So why not call midnight blue some other name. How about “dark blue”? It makes sense to me. It’s darker than normal blue, and it is certainly not the color of midnight, so that makes it dark blue. Unlike Mongoose bikes, Pacific mountain bikes with eighteen gears only came in three colors: black, dark green, and blue. They didn’t even have a pink for girls. I can understand this though. Pink is a fine color for a Mongoose bike, young girls can easily ride a racing bike, they’re smaller than mountain bikes. Mountain bikes are usually for rugged outdoors-like people, not eight-year-old girls. Young girls about that age usually go for a bike with a Barbie logo, some streamers, and a little bell. There was a little girl on Joe C’s block that had a bike like that. She was the same age as Joe C. and he couldn’t keep his eyes off her, ever, even when he was riding his dark green Mongoose racing bike.
