Late Night Ranter

We all want to be special, don’t we…I guess we kind of have to be. I’ve always found that when I start to think about the really big questions, there’s a sort of mental block that keeps me from really getting into it. Maybe we need to think we’re special. If we ever truly understood - not just knew - how insignificant we are, we might lose that sense of purpose that keeps us going.
It still bothers me though, the incessant urge everyone has to flaunt their uniqueness. We perceive everything relative to ourselves, everything is filtered in through a self-profiteering kind of a motive, no matter how disguised it may be.
Kinda makes you wonder if true “goodness” exists. If everything we do is done solely for ourselves, then all acts meant to help others are at the root, meant to help ourselves. And selfishness is “wrong”, right?
But we need to the ability to tell wrong from right, good from bad. If we don’t have an idea of where that line is, where the division is, then our species could likely destroy itself. Since all that was left would be survival and there were no ethics, a species with the brain capacity to destroy itself would stand a strong chance of annihilation. Or at least, there’d be an incredibly smaller population of isolated communities.
I wonder if ethics was an invention of man, or if we were born with an innate sense of right and wrong. Do animals know what’s right and wrong?
I say right and wrong is our own invention. We invented it for our own prosperity, to be able to co-exist without complete chaos. If we had no notion of right and wrong we would be animals. Animals who could think at high levels, but still animals.
Maybe that’s the way we were supposed to be.
