My Last Night With Her Rae
I dreamt it all before I woke to the faded murmer. Before I turned to her I wrapped my fingers lightly around my penis. I thought of how many times we had made love in this bed. I opened my eyes and looked out into the dark. It was thick and silent. The hand on my penis twitched and I rolled to my other side to take it in. She was nude on her back and the cotton sheet covered her from the waist down. I left one hand to stroke myself as the other reached for her chest. My fingers trembled as they traced a line between her breasts. She was sticky; the feverish sweat beginning to dry. I cupped her breast and it still felt alive. It was warm and I squeezed it. I brushed my fingers on her nipple. For once it didn't rise up to meet my touch, only stayed soft. Now I rose up and straddled her naked body with mine as I had done so often before. Except now she wasn't writhing beneath me. She wasn't stroking my back or kissing my neck. She wasn't reminding me to be quiet or gentle, she wasn't begging to feel me. She only remained motionless and let the moonlight from the window illuminate her face and shoulders. I lowered my head and kissed her mouth, letting my lips linger softly on hers. I couldn't feel the warm breath flowing from her nostrils. One of the many things I took for granted. Moving the sheet out of my way, I spread her legs. The smell of urine floated up and I ignored it. She was still wet enough for me to slide in easily. I pushed slowly, mesmerized. My mind was gone, not here. I kissed her nipples once I was fully inside of her. There was no rising and falling of her stomach as she breathed heavily. Her hips did not thrust up passionately. And yet, with my cock inside of her non-responsive cunt, with my tongue encouraging the hardening of her ever-soft nipples, this was more erotic. This was her when she hadn't the ability to hide or cover up. This was her stripped from everything and I'd be damned if I didn't feel how simple she was, how uncomplicated love could be.
I finished and covered her. My hand rested on her ribs, just below her cooling breast. I fell asleep with her as though it were just another night. In the morning I'd phone the hospital, in the morning I'd grieve. Tonight was still ours and I stroked the bottom of her breast with my thumb as I slipped back into sleep.
