Walking With Jesus Sarah K Lewry
I will never forget the first time I met my best friend, Jesus. I first heard about him at a 5 day club, and wanted to meet him myself. Being painfully shy, I decided to ask my mother to introduce me to him. She told me how to ask Jesus into my heart and to forgive me for my sins.
After that, the two of us became inseparable. Somehow, I knew that we would always be the best of friends. He and I would often go on long, quiet walks together. My favorite moments during the walks were when Jesus would stop and tell me about his Father. Every once in a while, he would point to a flower, tree or bird and say, “My Father made that. Isn’t it a beautiful work of art?” I would smile and say, “It certainly is. Your Father must be quite the artist!”
One day, Jesus turned to me and said, “I shall one day introduce you to my Father. You are also his handiwork. He has told me how much he loves you, and of the plan he has for your life.”
“Why can’t I meet your Father now?” I asked as tears filled my eyes. “Doesn’t he want to know me? Isn’t your Father ready to meet me now?”
Jesus said, “My Father already knows you. He held you in his mind even before he held you in the palm of his hand. It is not him who is not ready. It is you, my friend, who is not ready.”
“When will I be ready?” I quietly asked him.
“I cannot tell you the day or hour you will meet my Father. One day when he knows that you are ready, he will come to you and embrace you. Until then, I will always be your closest friend. At this moment, my Father happens to be quite busy. He is building you a beautiful mansion in his kingdom. But you must always remember that he is never too busy for his children.”
“I want to talk to your Father now. How can I talk to him if I don’t even know him?” I asked, puzzled. Jesus’ Father sounded pretty amazing to me. I was eager to learn as much about him as I possibly could.
“If you ever want to say something to my Father, just say it to Me. I will always tell him what you say.”
“Will I like your Father, Jesus?” I wondered.
He smiled and said, “Yes. You will come to love My Father very much. I have told him all about you, all your hopes and dreams. But, there is something that you need to know.”
“All right, Jesus. You can tell me.” I waited expectedly.
“My Father’s plan for you is much different from your own. I am afraid that there will be times when others hurt or insult you because you have chosen to be My friend. There will even be times when you feel like giving up. But I want you to remember, in those times when you are too weak to walk, I will pick you up and carry you. When you cry, I will wipe away your tears. I will talk to you when you are lonely and heal you when you are sick. I want you to remember that my Father and I would never want to hurt you. But sometimes, you will feel hurt and afraid. Never forget that My Father and I both love you more than you could ever imagine. This love is strong enough to help you overcome everything you must face.”
“What will I have to do Jesus?” I asked.
“All you have to do is learn to love and trust Me. That is enough. Remember that my Father has a perfect plan, and that every step you take is part of that plan. Every step you take brings you closer to my Father’s side. His loving eyes are watching are always watching you. You need to know that each and every time you are hurt will be worth it. I promise that one day, you will never hurt again. When this day comes, all you will know is my Father’s love.”
“Will that day come soon, Jesus?” I wondered.
“To you, it will seem like forever. But to my Father, it will seem like no time has gone by at all.”
“Is there anything else you want me to do, Lord?” I humbly asked.
“Yes. There’s one more thing. My Father has given you many gifts. He told me he has blessed you with the gift of words. He gave you this gift so see his hand at work in your life. Use this gift to tell others about me. This gift will touch the lives of others in ways you could never imagine. If you are willing to use this gift for me, you will be blessed.”
“Yes, Jesus. Tell your father that I will use my gift for him. Tell him that I am eager to meet him.”
Jesus smiled and said, “Yes. I will tell him those things. He already knows how eager you are to meet him. He knows many things about you that even you don’t know. He knows you better than you know yourself. All you have to do is know that I am here for you. That’s all you will have to do. Trust me.”
I could see Jesus’ hand reaching towards mine. I reached out and held it. For quite some time, Jesus and I fell silent. We walked side by side, hand in hand. For the first time in my life, I was satisfied. I knew that I would always be loved and safe. For now, that was all I would need to know. Jesus’ promise was that he and his Father would love me forever. I somehow knew that they would always keep their promises.
