ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
My name is Rahul Prabhakar, and I am a writer from India. My life, if summarized, will look very similar to Bridget Jones. I am the quintessential 20-something guy, who is trying to make both the ends meet. I would describe myself as a fun loving person, introvert at times and extrovert at others. In fact, I am quite talkative with my close circle of friends. My attitude towards life is to give everything that I pursue my hundred percent and live my life to the fullest. My core belief is that it is important to understand that each person has his/ her own space in life and it is quite necessary to grant him/ her that space. [January 2007]
It was a moment of reckoning. The next five minutes would be crucial. And Sam didn't have a clue...about how things would turn out. As he stood there, waiting impatiently at the Ambala Cantonment Bus Station, he observed how some things in life never change - like the deafening noise of the mob, the hustle of the local passenger buses, the seemingly foolish and loquacious Punjabi women, or the famous Puran Singh's Dhabha.
Sam had been here on several occasions, but it was never this bad. Perhaps it was the anticipation that had begun to build painfully within him or the lovesick emotion he was desperately trying to overcome. All this while, he had been seeking answers. His effort was valiant, but fruitless. And today he finally made the cut...traveling all the way from Delhi, a journey that took him six years to complete.
Sam hurriedly looked at his watch. "Where the hell are you?" he mumbled. He lit his cigarette, took a few puffs, and glanced at the moon. Two minutes later, he noticed the blinding headlights as a giant car screeched to halt. Rohan had arrived and with him, the moment of truth. Sam couldn't decide if he was nervous or just felt the urge to look adult, but something made him pull out another cigarette.
"Do you still smoke?" Rohan asked from a distance. Rohan looked more handsome and fairer after marriage. He was always the talk of the town during those college years, an absolute stunner in the looks department.
"So you finally made it!" Sam replied, in a vehement outcry. "Why did you do that, Rohan?"
"Do what?"
"Oh, so now you want me to tell what all you did? Stop playing these games Rohan. Do you have any idea how tough it gets?"
It was a long, anxious wait for Sam. He had given his all to this relationship, never equating love with anything else in life. In fact, he was always the more expressive of the two of them.
"Look at what you did to me, Rohan. We could've had a good life together, fucking real good life! But you never wanted it, so what we got now is this!" "Bloody six long years...you have to give me an explanation." Sam's voice grew louder.
For Rohan, living a lie was easier than dealing with the truth. He always feared coming out and forbid himself from happiness, with the one person he truly loved. Sam, on the other hand, was completely at ease in his skin. If he wanted something desperately, he would go all the way to get it. All he needed was the teensiest push to get started. Rohan could not give that push, what he gave instead was a dilapidated heart.
"Sam, I am married now, you must think rationally."
"So what was all that happened between us? Where does that go?"
"You got to forget the past. It is the only way...move on with life, and stop troubling me. It will only be good for the both of us, Sam."
Sam woke up too late to reality. Theirs was nothing but a rapid momentaneous association of things that meet and pass. His mother used to candidly say, "All your friends are getting settled in life, it's your turn now." He used to coyly change the subject. He grudged this now, "I should've listened."
Sam always wanted something out of life, things that were meant to last a fortune. He was unwilling to settle for half measures for the sake of speed, he always thought of the long term. Distances, for him, were momentary. Why on earth would he travel so far, after so many years, if it were not for true love?
Most people, anyway, would have disagreed of a relationship like theirs. It was only Rohan's persistence that led Sam into all this. What followed eventually was quite a revelation; a certain life changing experience for Sam. They had a rollicking live-in relationship in college that lasted for a little more than four years.
Throughout the ordeal, Sam had been extremely nervous. Suddenly there was a momentary lapse of reason...and a gunshot.
Rohan rushed for the nearest STD booth, he has some calls to make.
