A Brief Return
Neil Southern

My head feels fuzzy.

I think I was in a car crash.

It was my fault. I was using my mobile phone and didn’t notice the car in front had braked.

I hit him.

The lorry behind me had no chance of stopping. It was horrendous.
And now I just don’t know where I am.

Perhaps I have been in a coma or something. Everything seems strange.
Did it happen yesterday, last week or last year?

I don’t feel any pain.

But look, there is a girl. She’s quite young. Is she a nurse?

She smiles.

I like her.

What does she want of me?

I do like her.

Her skin is soft and her eyes piercing.

She sits beside me as if she knows me.

I like her smell.

Nothing is said but I feel intoxicated in her presence.

She is kissing me!

I can’t seem to move.

Her pupils are dark and her lips are so full.

I want her!

She wants me, but how can this be?

She is so young and so beautiful.

I can’t help myself but I feel as if I am abusing this creature.
What am I doing?

Stop!

I feel a pain. Blood fills my eyes and my lover smiles.

She is not a girl.

I am no longer a man.

My return to this earth after my death has been short.

My vision of beauty fades as she begins to consume me and everything fades once again.
