LOVE
Love is elementary school crushes. Cameron and I were going to get married. Finally getting over the fact that boys are gross and have cooties. Love is holding hands for the first time and being proud. Not caring what people think as I walk through the crowd. Love is my first kiss. Being so nervous that I pretty much miss. Going to school the next day, and it seems to be everyone’s conversation. Love is those special dates that take me hours to get ready for, even if I’m just going to his house to watch a movie. Love is a long distance relationship when I go off to college. Phone calls and text messages will keep it alive. Love is hopefully still pulling out chairs and opening doors after fifty years of marriage. Love is happiness.
HAPPINESS
Happiness is driving in the car to my little brother’s soccer game, with the sun beaming down on my face. Seeing him kick the game winning goal, even if it was accidentally for the other team. Happiness is forty of us; grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, and cousins packing into my Grandma and Grandpa’s house on Christmas Eve to open presents and play spoons. Tables breaking, and having to switch to plastic because it got a little rough. Happiness is looking at old pictures and laughing until you cry. Big bangs, colored spandex, and long socks folded over with lace at the top. Happiness is friendship.
FRIENDSHIP
Celebrating a Little Mermaid birthday party when I’m eight and a night full of concerts when I turn sixteen. Friendship is so random and fun, not ever knowing what’s coming next. A night of what’s supposed to be filled with watching movies turns into what we thought were our “rebellious” nights of taco bell and hot tubing. Friendship is late night phone calls. Gossiping about how excellent or horrendous the date was. Friendship is finishing each others’ sentences. Everything we think and say is practically the same. Friendship is going to a Lutheran confirmation, even if it means missing my first high school dance. Friendship is laughing, crying, and arguing all in one night. Friendship is driving around blasting the music with the windows rolled down, and the heat turned up. Friendship is beautiful.
BEAUTY
Beauty is natural. Rolling out of bed and going out. Not having to hide behind the make-up. Beauty is kind and truthful. Not pretending to be something I’m not. Beauty is original. Being one of a kind and standing out among the crowd. Beauty is rare. It can’t be seen, but it can be felt. Beauty is the sunset beaming down into the ocean, looking back is my reflection shining and glistening among the waves. Beauty is looking up into the sky on a clear, crisp night. Billions of radiant stars shimmering among each other. Beauty is a family vacation to Disney World, watching the Parade of Lights, and the fireworks that light up the sky. Beauty is forever.
