Edward Jones stood at the top of the stairs leading to the school. The bell, that signalled the end of the school year, still rang in his ears. Students swarmed past him in a rush to get out and he didn't pay them any mind as he scanned the crowd searching for butch and his gang of tormentors. He continued to look for a few more minutes, finally satisfied that they weren't in the crowd lying in wait for him. He started down the stairs, smirking slightly at the thought of butch's ugly face screwed up in concentration as he wrote numerous lines on the blackboard, when a large calloused hand reached around him and grabbed the elastic waist of his jockey shorts and jerked upward, hard. Laughter rang out as a circle of students sorrounded him to see what embarrasment would come to Edward today. An hour later, after everyone had left, Edward sat up and wiped the tears from his face. It just wasn't fair out of all the kids in the entire school to pick on, why him? He dreaded going home because he knew his dad would see the blood stains in his underwear and remind him of the same thing Butch had just showed the whole school, that he was nothing but a panty waist. Edward finally got his courage up and began to make his way home. As he walked he imagined all the terrible things he would like to do to Butch, punching him in his snotty nose was top on his list. These were all great fantasies, but that's just what they were, fantasies. Edward continued walking too ashamed of himself to even walk with his chin up, after he awhile he finally lifted his head and looked around. He was alarmed to find himself in a nieghborhood he did not recognize at all, trying to stay calm, he decided to go into the first store he saw and ask for directions. As he took another look around, he was relieved and a little uneasy to see a store front shimmering in the fog, fog that wasn't there a moment ago, nor was the store. He shuddered as he made his way to the door. It opened for him as soon as he reached out to grasp the handle. He took a step in and the door swung shut behind him, although he didn't notice this, he was far too busy looking around at the items in the store. Most of the stuff in the store was, to be perfectly frank, junk. It was the kind of items his dad said they sale to tourists to jap them out of thier money. Only one item caught his eye, it was a ring with a poster above it that proclaimed bully-B-gone in bright letters and below that headline was a picture of a beefy young man, with a strong resemblance to Butch, dissapearing in a cloud of bright green dust. Edward reached into his pocket and felt for his allowance, after assuring himself it was there he grabbed the ring and made his way through to the front of the store. There was an old man with an ancient face and bright blue eyes behind the counter and as he rang up Edward's purchase he explained to him how to use the ring. "Legend has it that the ring will get rid of the person that you happen to hate at the moment" the old man said, "But you have to mean it, it has to be a burning hatred inside of you," he continued in an ominous voice. "You picture the said person in your mind and turn the ring around your finger one time, the next morning that person will no longer be with the living. "I do not hold with such nonsense and will let the ring go for a mere dollar fifty," the old shopkeeper exclaimed. Edward stepped out of the store with a big smile of satisfaction on his face and was surprised to find himself in a neighborhood he recognized. He got home, threw his books down, and raced up to his room to try out his new purchase. He sat and studied the ring, which was decorated with all sorts of weird shapes etched into the band, and he started to think about Butch and all the things he had done to torment Edward. Edward started out meaning for the event to be a joke, but as he began to turn the ring he noticed his hand shaking with rage, and he pictured Butch's dumb face in his mind and turned the ring. After a good nights sleep of picturing Butch meeting all sorts of unfortunate ends, Edward made his way downstairs and plopped into his chair at the kitchen table. As he ate his way through a big breakfast of eggs and toast, he looked up at his father whose face was covered by a newspaper. The front page was enough to completely take away his appetite, the headline read: Boy killed by intoxicated driver and underneath the headline was a large picture of Butch. Beads of sweat dotted his forehead and Edward felt that he was going to be sick. His mom noticed and asked if he felt okay? Edward replied that he didn't and that he should probably stay home from the morning service at the church. His mom felt his feverish forehead and immediately agreed, his dad put down the paper and gave him a disgusted look, "He's faking it, that little boy is a friggin pansy". Edward mumbled an apology and, shamefaced, made his way to his bedroom. After he closed the door he slumped down in the floor and his thoughts turned to all the times his dad had cut him down with his words and fists. As he did this, disgust with himself over what he did to Butch, was overshadowed by a cruel hatred for his father and in a nervous act of anger Edward twisted the ring on his hand without realizing it. As soon as the ring completed the circle around Edward's finger the shrill ringing of the telephone echoed throughout the room. Edward looked down at his hand and after realizing what he had done picked up the phone with a shaking hand. It was one of the neighbors on the other line and she explained to Edward that his father had a heartache while driving to church and ran into a tree, she began crying and told Edward it killed his mother on impact and to stay at the house until she could come over to tend to him. Edward hung up the phone without saying goodbye and began to vomet violently onto the living room carpet. He looked down at his hand through blurry tear filled eyes, when he did a picture rose in his mind of a frail, ten year old boy who was constantly teased and bullied by classmates and his own father. With nothing but hatred for his self Edward twisted the ring as hard as he could and as soon as it finished circle he felt his windpipe close up and he began choking for air that would not come. Edward's neighbor found him a few moments later, purple faced and lying in his own vomit, dead. She began hurrying toward the phone to dial emergency services, before she made it to the phone she noticed a ring and picked it up and set it in her pocket.

"My God, rough tale to be sure! I'm going to say this: It holds the reader's interest throughout, I'm sure, but also, I think you should cut it right after he realizes he's responsible for killing his own mom. Let him live with the guilt. Also, you don't say his dad died so leave it at that--to continue being nasty to him. That way, seems to me, the story has more power. Just my ideas. " -- barfield.
"I agree about the way the ending should be however I didn't realize it until after I submitted and read it again. Most people said I tend to rush through my endings, so I drew this one out a bit. By rough do you mean it needs work?" -- emory , georgia, USA.
"No, by rough I mean it's full of thoughts of revenge, murder, death, bloody details, etc. Strong, in other words. " -- barfield.
