A Peaceful Sabbath E Rocco Caldwell
A Peaceful Sabbath
It was after a series of violence and death that the day of burial crept from the shadows of anguish, a hot Sabbath. The gist of the week revisited hidden beneath the blood stained road and blood soaked balcony. A by-product of the times and the hate it was wrapped up in. Thousands of miles away in the comfort of his White House, plans were being drawn as a legacy and none more because the killing would continue long after the president was out of office. He could stare at his Nobel for peace and lecture on the need of peace in the Middle East while some college paid him an insane amount of money. The killing would go on like the flow of water down the Nile or the dying of red out of the dusking sky. But for the moment, it was a peaceful Sabbath.
No one could explain why a couple of Palestinian gunmen picked a van filled with a family of Jewish settlers on their way to Jerusalem in the West Bank as more victims to the endless hate! The vicious attack left a mother and father dead and several children wounded. The road stained with the blood of nonsense and perdition for the survivors would be in their personal hells. It all was too complicated like untying a shoestring knotted over and over again until it formed a twisted enigma. The Jewish settlers wished to be in the land of their religion. They weren’t Zionists forcing Palestinians off the land they were committed to their faith only wanting to live in a land they felt was holy. They held no hate in their hearts towards the Palestinians in fact they held sympathy to the Palestinian plight. In a violence moment, bitter rage choked and gagged, until two dead bodies lay in the road. For now though it was a peaceful Sabbath. A time to remember with flowers and pretty words and caskets draped with the Star of David.
Hate was blind almost ubiquitous circumnavigating the globe settling on the branches of a Colombian Rainforest or in the bayous of Louisiana. It burned out of control in Bosnia like a house capsulated in fire and grew deep like the roots of a Redwood in the hovels of Europe. The earth was saturated by it and pungent with its stink! Humanity never free of it because it nestled in the corners of fear and ignorance and they crowded in the regions of the human psyche. It grew unobstructed in religion all across the world. The tool humanity used to mold itself in the image of normalcy. But what was normalcy, it had the tendency to change like some confused clown unsure of what face to wear! In Texas it dragged a black man to death and in Florida it beat a homosexual man to death! What was normalcy? In Bosnia it lynched a Moslem and in Northern Ireland it blew up a bus with children on board! Hate wore jingoist tassels and narrow-minded adornments equivocating to ignorance that burned like the sun!
Yet for now it was a peaceful Sabbath.
God rested on the Sabbath so remember to keep it holy!
There must be a time of rest even from hatred?
The children of the dead Jewish settlers wept one son his fingers stilled stained with the blood of his mother and father. Here, hate burns, like cedar in a fireplace and took the substance of energy neither created or destroyed just recycled. The child let it churn in him to a fine butter so it could be easily spread out over other Palestinians. Let the Sabbath pass but not the pain or grief. Let them simmer like the Palestinians let their hatred simmer. It was the trend of the globe. No plans from Washington could negate the building rage in the heart of the son as he stared at the flags over his parents’ caskets. No UN resolution could bleach the minds from the odium of nearly a hundred years!
Maybe during the Sabbath, if the right words were spoken could the rage wan? What sort of words could be said to ease the lost of a child’s parents? Could the Bible contain them or Koran or Torah? The words of God had yet to stem any hate in any country! No, they only enabled hatred to spurn like weeds in the garden. The Klansman swung a Bible in one hand and a noose in the other as he and his horde lynched a black man for staring at a white woman or the American Government allowing doctors to affect black men with syphilis, a madman in Iraqi poured biological germs on his own people! All under the eyes of God and in tune with religious overtures! Religion wasn’t the avenue to travel up if trying to find the answer, a solution to end hate and bring humanity to a peaceful Sabbath. God was lost in religion as much so as His creations. Religion only idolized the Sabbath but never embraced it. Perhaps there was no answer as how to stop the cycle? Just times of rests, to ponder and heal and a time to let it wax cold. The cycle of hate continues as tanks roll over homes in the occupied areas of Israel and soldiers shoot children and women as the world holds it breath and prays for one more peaceful Sabbath.

"Very visual and up to modern times. I enjoyed it." -- Edward, seattle, washington, USA.
""A Peaceful Sabbath", Dear Rocco, I am not a Christain, But l do respect every religion - I do read the Bible to know that Jesus was always proforming Mircles on Sabbath - hence your story is what the World is today - You have bought that peace in this- everywhere that you have used the word Sabbath it is like healing and peaceful and if only people would believe the truth in the Bible could they ever believe how holy Sabbath is." -- Amy, Hayes, Middlesex.
