A Taste Of Snow
Amarjit Bhambra

In 1962, we arrived in England,
A few hours ago, you could feel
that last hot sun on the plane,
We left behind my Grand-dad and
Grand-Ma,
Our Uncles and Aunties,
For the last time we slept
Around our gran-ma's house,
For it was our last taste of
Fresh sugar cane,
God gave us a chance to change our minds,
When our flight for some reason was
Cancelled,
But mum, decided she wanted to join dad,
And next morning at 6 O’clock we all got up
To leave behind our Africa.

It was my childhood memories,
It was out last farewells,
I remember like in my dreams,
Picking fresh oranges from trees,
The chicken running wild in fields,
The African ladies carrying fruit
Baskets on their heads,
And babies tied on their backs,
Oh, the taste of a small purple fruit,
(My favorite),
How was l to know, it was all going to
Be my last,
And what l hated most was the green flies,
Especially in the toilets in the heat.

What l loved most,
Was my grandma and grand dad's house,
A huge house lined with trees,
And sugar cane growing in the fields.

A garland of fresh African merrigolds,
Were placed around my brothers neck,
By our much loved favorite Aunty,
As she hugged and kissed all of us,
And send us packing to see Daddy.

We arrived in Britain carpeted with
Snow,
This was the place where we were to grow.
