Abortion As A Basic Human Right James Cartwright
On March 13, 2003, the Senate passed a bill outlawing partial birth abortions. While it may seem like my essay on human rights is in favor of the unborn child, it’s not. Partial birth abortions are abortions done late into the second trimester, when the fetus is more developed. Now, if the house approves this bill, which it will, all that’s left is for the president to sign the bill. He’s about as eager as can be about that. I have a huge problem with this bill, and any other bill that aims to restrict a woman’s right to choose.
Oftentimes, abortions are done very late into the pregnancy. This is usually done with the sole intention of saving the mother’s life. If there are complications in the pregnancy, now doctors have a choice between saving the mother by killing the child, or letting both die. Now, there will be no choice; the mother and her child will have to die. I don’t see how this works in anybodies favor, unless people make the argument for “god’s will.” Even then, there’s the separation of church and state is in place to protect us from arguments such as that.
I also believe that laws that prohibit abortion in general go against a woman’s human rights. When a zygote inhabits a woman during her pregnancy, it gets rights. Pro-choice activists are shooting themselves in the foot when they say that it doesn’t get rights. It’s a living being, and it has rights. End of story. But the fact is, they are sharing the mother’s body as a vessel. Therefore, they only get one set of rights. Because the mother is clearly the dominant being in that situation, her rights supercede those of the unborn zygote’s. So if she chooses to terminate the unborn child, I think it is well within her bounds to do so.
Also, often times the guy leaves the girl after getting her pregnant. If he can get her pregnant and run away, there is no reason why she should have to go through that alone. Having the option to abort the baby helps to keep women on an equal playing field with men, rather than just being someone men can take advantage of. Also, if the man leaves, often times the mother won’t want the child. I believe it is much better to not have the child than to have it be born unwanted.
Pro-choice laws are always put in place with the mother’s human rights in mind. Not only does she benefit, but often times, life is better for the unborn child if it isn’t brought into this world. Clearly, allowing the mother to choose helps her and is a basic factor in her human rights. As ironic as it sounds, pro-choice laws help to improve the quality of life for people. This definitely falls under the category of human rights.
