Again Tamsin Butler
Closing time at the local pub, the young girl shoves her hands deep in her pockets and shuffles out. The cold wind bites at her skin like a swarm of ants. The night was going to be cold so she quickly looked for a warm space to sleep tonight. After 4 years she knew all the best places to stay and she knew not to stay in a pub too long as people got suspicious of her. She hadn’t wanted to leave the warmth of the pub with it’s good atmosphere and big open fire, she had stared into the fire for ages trying to remember the thing from her past that was niggling at her brain. Now she curled up in a shop doorway and closed her eyes into cold darkness.
The street sweeper was the first to come across her body. He gently nudged her trying to move her on before the police moved her on or arrested her. She didn’t move. He looked down at her and saw her frosted cheeks and her blue lips and realised she was gone.
To the local morgue she was just another Jane Doe with no-one who cared for her.
Jamie the new recruit was given the job of bagging and tagging her as a rite of passage. He walked into the coldness of the storage room where he saw the body lying on the table, he crept closer as if she was going to move like in a cheap horror movie. When he got right next to the table he slowly peeled back the cloth and looked at her. She looked like an angel, cold and perfect like a girl carved in marble.
It’s so unfair he thought, she was so young.
Katya? Woke up in a soft warm bed, the pillows were squashy like giant marshmallows, the duvet was tucked up around her enveloping her in a sea of warmth. The sun streamed through the curtains and there was a delicious smell of cooked breakfast coming up the stairs. She felt safe and secure for the first time in 4 years. The door creaked open and a smiling woman looked round the corner, ‘Breakfast is ready darling’ she said.
Katya looked at the woman and realised that she knew who she was, it was her mother. That was impossible though, she died 5 years ago when she was only 15. That was the reason she had left home because she couldn’t cope with her step dad’s violence, and there she was large as life and happy again.
This cannot be real she thought but she was too pleased to see her to question it.
She jumped out of bed and hugged her as hard as possible, her mum was surprised but smiled at her and hugged her back.
Jamie carefully brushed the hair away from the young girls face, and laid her hands by her side. He searched through her pockets for a clue to who she was but found nothing but an old photo of a blonde woman with a small baby. He looked at the photo trying to imagine what type of life she would have had and where she came from. He gently put the photo in her hand and closed her fingers around it, it was obviously important to her so she should keep it with her in death too.
He sighed and walked back to his work bench where he wrote out the tag as neatly as he could with all the info he knew, Age unknown, Sex female, Name Jane doe, Where found M and S doorway, Time 7.30 am.
He tied the tag to her toe and then slipped the body bag round her feet, he pulled it up over her and tried to think of it as an over coat keeping her warm. He took one last look at her perfect face before he zipped the bag up and pushed her into the freezer chamber. He closed the door and walked up the stairs back to the main office.
After breakfast Katya spent the day Hugging and talking to her Mum, they had so much to catch up on, they talked and talked for hours, her Mum apologised for leaving her and said she was always watching which struck Katya as odd but just thought it was her mum using the wrong words. They both said how much they loved each other and Katya told her about her life. Her mum was shocked at the fact she was living on the streets and told her about her aunt who lived very close by and how she could never have children of her own but doted on her when she was younger, she gave her the address and told her to visit her. “Why? Aren’t you coming with me?” asked Katya.
“I am so sorry darling but I can’t, I will be with you though”.
Katya’s mum wrapped her arms round her and kissed her forehead before saying “it’s time to go darling, you can’t stay with me”
Katya yawned and tried to say “where am I going” but her eyes were too heavy and her head was groggy, she closed her eyes and listened to her mum’s heart beating in her chest.
She woke with the sound of a heart beat in her ears and feeling bitterly cold, everything was dark around her and she had plastic covering her face, she panicked, had she been kidnapped.
Jamie was listening to his headphones whilst sweeping the office, a job he hated doing on a Friday night but only 10 minutes to go. He had just reached the stairs when he heard the banging. He pulled his head phones off and listened again, there was the banging again and it was coming from the cold room. “Very funny guys” he shouted “you can stop now, I’m not scared”
He picked up the broom and started to walk down the stairs to prove he wasn’t scared.
He pushed the door of the cold room and went in, he felt round the wall and switched on the lights, Silence.
Katya pushed her finger into the gap above her head and pulled the zip moved down quickly, she pushed her head out into the cold darkness and banged her head against the ceiling. She banged her fist against the ceiling hoping someone would hear her.
There was the banging again, Jamie realised it was coming from the freezer unit, Now he was a little scared, but it must be the guys playing a trick on him. He moved closer to the drawers and listened for the one the banging was coming from, it was the new one. He slowly opened the door and lifted the broom to protect his face, Nothing happened.
Katya laid on the cold banging the ceiling when she realised she could see light, her eyes fought to adjust and she could make out a blurred figure holding something she tried to push herself towards the figure and found her muscles in her arms wouldn’t work after all the banging.
Jamie saw the body move on the slab and almost fainted, they weren’t meant to do that, he tentatively moved his hand towards the edge and pulled the slab out. The girl moved and blinked in the light, Jamie just stared too scared to move or scream.
Katya felt the earth move and then saw a person staring down at her, “where am I?” she asked “what happened?” She dragged herself up and stumbled as far as she could before falling on the tiled floor, blackness again
She woke up in a soft bed with big pillows and a warm duvet, the light streamed though the curtains, this time there was someone sitting at the end of the bed, it was a young man and he was smiling at her. Katya felt the bump on her head and then looked at the man, she recognised him from the cold room.
“I thought you were gone again” he said,
“I think I am here for a while” Katya replied.
