Before I Go Mad
Tamsin Butler

You looked like you were asleep when I found you. You were still warm and had a smile on your face like you were finally out of all pain. I can't believe how quickly you went.
You hugged me one night and said look after daddy, and that you loved me. I cried that night because I knew that you were going to leave soon. You held on for as long as you could and then sleep just took over. I remember the night clearly, I slept on the sofa downstairs so I could listen to you breathing and if you needed me. I woke up at 2 and you were fast asleep so I didn't check on you, I kick myself for that. I know I couldn't have done anything to stop it but may be just sitting with you as you passed may have been better than you going alone? Im never going to know the answer to that. At three I woke again and this time I couldn't hear you breathing. I crept in calling Mummy? You didn't move. I pulled back the covers and checked for a pulse but you were gone.
The worst thing I have ever had to do came next. I had to go and wake Daddy and say that you had gone! It was heartbreaking and I will never forget that. We sat with you for about 20 minutes just looking at you and not saying a word, then we both kissed you and left you in peace. I miss you so much and needed to get this out before I go mad.
Im so glad that you are out of pain but wish my pain would leave too.
