Behind The Wheel
Harvey Kennett

You drive a car. It’s a nice car. It goes “Vroom” when you put your foot on the pedal thingie. If you do not have the nasty hand-brake thingie on, then it ACTUALLY MOVES ! (Only if you press the correct pedal thingie..there are 3 of them so it can get confusing)

Let’s pretend you are driving with the big wheel thingie called a STEERING WHEEL.

You are on a VERY BIG ROAD. We shall call it a MOTORWAY.

A motorway lets 3 cars travel side-by-side in the SAME direction. I know it is confusing, but just pretend you understand, ok ?

You are on a motorway in your nice car. You are going “Vroom”. The car is moving forwards. You can always tell forwards because it is the direction of the headlight thingies of the nice car. Forwards is good. Forwards is beautiful. Forwards means you are GOING SOMEWHERE.

Where are you going ?

Where would you like to go ?

Are you nearly there yet ?

The car moves forwards on the motorway.

It’s a very nice car.

It goes “Vroom !”

Look ! There are other cars as well. There are also lorries. A lorry is like a car, but it is bigger. Much bigger. Lorries are EVIL. They hate cars. Lorries EAT cars when you are not looking where you are going.

Oops !

“Vroom!” went the car.
“Smash!” went the lorry.

Oh Dear.

The car is not very nice now. It is the wrong shape.
Your body is the wrong shape as well. So is your wife and children.
We shall call this shape SQUASHED.
The lorry is the wrong shape as well. We shall call this BUCKLED.

Silly lorry forgot to make his special light flash to tell you he was changing his lane.
Silly lorry forgot to look in his mirror and see your nice car going Vroom! beside him.
Silly lorry made your nice car hit the back of the lorry.

Spin went the nice car. Round and round and round.

Smash went the nice car behind you in to your car. Round and round and round.

Crunch went the barrier, that runs along the road.

Flip went your nice car. Over and over and over.

Smash went your nice car as a car on the other side of the road bumped in to you.

Bang went the windscreen as it broke in to lots of pretty pieces.

Schlurp went your wife’s head as a sharp piece of metal went through her left eye.

Scream went your young son as his right arm fell out the car and was torn off by the tarmac.

Howl went your daughter as her torso was cut in two by the razor-sharp buckled roof of your nice car.

Cough as your lungs exploded a bloodied froth upon the dashboard when the steering wheel rammed in to your chest.

“Daddy ? Daddy ?” the distant girl’s voice cries.

You jump with a start, as your eyes gaze upon the road. Sweat drips from your brow. A sudden fear knots your stomach with the realization of the dream.

It was a warning.

**********************************************

“Are we nearly there yet ?” asks the young girl’s voice.

You look over to the passenger seat. Your wife is asleep, and so is your son in the back of the car.

“We’re nearly there”, you hear yourself say, “Just a few more miles”.

Your eyes return to the road, and you see the lorry ahead.

"Thank you for the education in English terms such as motorway, lorry. This, Harvey, is very good. I was hooked from the moment I read the first line. I truly enjoyed the two works you submitted. Keep up the great work" -- e. rocco caldwell.
"This was scary... The vivid description of the family's death is so realistic that I could actually 'see' the scene at the back of my mind. Congratulations!" -- Luis Felipe Moura.
