She never broke the skin before
Was too scared to feel the searing
Rubber bands, safety pins, paper clips
Provided the dull awakening to keep her going
Just for a little while
Her love couldn't burn on her wrist
It jumped and bit like a rabid beast
No.
Now she lies there
Chocolate tresses splaying out acrosst her pillow
Glaciers of blue peering
From rivers of depression
A silver blade of hope
Caresses her wrist
Fondles the vein
Kisses the blood
Memories play slowly and deftly
Through her head
Of her love, her best friends
Her family
Her hate, and despair
Her religion
The symbol forms itself on her arm
And she smiles.
