Cheese For Me' Crackers
Jack M Brown

The kettle whistled ecstatically, springing Teak to his feet. The mug, sugar and tea bag were all ready. He poured the steaming water into the cup, letting it slosh about and settle as he watched the brown and white swirl and turn. Teak sighed.

"What's this?" mumbled Teak, silently. His glasses were propped upon the bridge of his nose as he looked down at the morning newspaper quizzically. A big headline was splashed across the page, ‘Wizards Reach the Moon in Contraption’. "My word." He began to read the article with much interest, reading it out as he went. "‘The extra weight exerted upon the moon by the two Wizard astronauts has started it to fall from the sky.’ My word, hmm indeed. ‘The world will end by two o'clock this afternoon. Cheese sandwiches are expected all round.’ Hmm…cheese sandwiches…"

Teak stood up with the mug in hand. He walked out of the kitchen, his slippers flapping at the sole from wear and tear, through the hallway and out of the front door. There, in the sky, the moon was clearly visible, moving slowly closer and closer. There was less than a good half hour remaining.

The old Elf sat in the garden seat next to the rose bush and looked up into the sky. With one large gulp he finished drinking half of his cup of tea.

The Wizards planned their great excursion years ago and finally found a way to get to the moon using an old metal bin and some fire crackers. A hint of magic too, Teak expected, watching life tick away to its doom by keeping a close eye on his pocket watch and the big yellow ball getting ever larger.

Teak was surprisingly calm seeing as the impending doom of the world was gradually edging closer. He honestly didn't think he was going to die. No one would want to destroy such a nice house of thatched roof and a lovely rose bush filled garden now would they? No one would. The minutes ticked away until the moon was barely twenty feet from the ground. Then, it fell with a plod, crushing the town hall down the road. The two Wizards fell off the side from the picnic table that they took along with them and into the rose bush beside Teak. The old Elf looked befuddled.

"What, what, what is going on?" said Teak, acting as if he wanted to get up and help. The two young Wizards fell out of the bush covered with thorns. "What are you two younguns up too? Destroying my beautiful rose bush and all. And why is the world still here, hmm?"

"Well," said one of the Wizards, "we used some magic to slow the moon down, didn't do any harm this way."

“Except for the town hall of course,” said another.

"Well," said Teak, unable to continue the argument, "be off with you, you little rascals. Be sure to bring me back some cheese for me' crackers. Go on, be off! Hmpf, youths today."

And so the world gained a giant ball of cheese stuck to its side, providing the citizens with tasty morsels for ever and ever.

"Hey Jack, nice story! I like it because its short, for one. Cannot really read 10,000 stories on line! It's very funny as well. I'm going to show it to my 12 year old daugther. I think she'll like it too. Thanks!" -- Jersey Mike, Belgium.
