Choosing Dorothy Getchell
The wet, rotting jungle of Cambodia hides the torn body of a soldier. The beginnings of a man barely 19. His body shivers in the sweltering heat of a faraway land. War is not quiet. It shrieks with the wounds of many. Blaring bombs torch the night sky, as muddy boots pound on unfamiliar soil. While his blood quietly drains into an already gorged land another battle rages. The entities of life and death battle to claim him.
Before his broken body a dark angel kneels. Its withered hand reaches out to him. Fighting against its touch he painfully recoils, while his weakened body struggles to push away the coldness. A gravely voice asks, "why do you fear me, it was not I who hurt you." "I am here to put an end to your suffering." I am your guide and your passage to a far better place."
"Leave him be!" Life shouts. "He deserves to live, for he came to this land with a purpose, and purpose is the essence of life." "You would steal the will from him, his desires, his dreams." "He would be hopeless in your grasp, with no love of family or friends, nor dreams or hopes." " Why do you torment him so?"
Pulling back the dark angel raises its head and screams. "I am not a thief!" "He is closer to death than life." "I take nothing from him." " I bring him the balm for his pain and anguish." I grant him his freedom." "Freedom to escape this war and all its horrors." "He knew before coming to this battlefield that death is always closer in war." "His choosing life is not the way." "For life is a constant struggle with continual change required." " I can put and end to that struggle." "I can liberate his soul." Assured of the logic and unaccustomed to losing the dark specter leans closer, engulfing the soldier in its tar colored wings.
Lifes' voice, sure and clear. resonates "Free him, he is not yours for the taking, the choice remains with him."
With strength draining from his worn body the soldier acknowledges his choices. His feverish mind questions his visitors.
He asks of life. " Can you bring me from this would be grave and promise me a life of joy and peace?' "Would you free me from my pain and suffering?"
As life stands to make its plea, the angry cry of gunfire screams, hungry to claim another.
"Life is a journey you choose to be on." "There are no guarantees." "You will endure pain and suffering in order to learn compassion and forgiveness." "Loneliness will enable you the comfort of love." "Your wants and desires are not bargained for but are earned through patience and understanding." "To grow beyond what you are and become what was intended, you only need desire." "Your options are limitless." "What you need to remember always is death is inevitable but living is a choice."
In the presence of life, the roaring battle cries are humbled. Muted they retreat into the scorched labyrinth enabling the boys cries for help to be heard.
