Compassionate Darkness
Jersey Mike

He said that He must work
the work He was
sent to work
during the day
because the night is coming
when no one can work*

but He didn’t say why
the moonlight shuns
a strong back bent double
just after He flicked
the holiest switch with
spit and clay and
the pool of Siloam

the night then belongs to
the toilers, the lazy
the pure of heart
pure of ignorance
brothers of the barley and
imbibers of the grape

the darkness is truly
the compassionate master
treating worshippers to
a simpler life
under his wide arms
phases of the moon
hinting at the coming
of anguish

a chance to escape
under his big blanket
enjoy the fruits

until Edison invented the
God damned
light bulb

(*John 9:4)
