The clock chimes one o’clock...
Surrounded by sleepers
Alone in the dark
Heart pounding
Dark dreams haunting
I pace the night.
You sleep on.
Should I wake you
Or have I asked enough already
How much will push you over
The edge is close I fear
And the children sleep
Innocence snoring
In safe content
I wander the night
Stalked by the needs
Of the sleepers around me
Passing the kitchen
Dog’s tail beats
A counterpoint to my feet
Crickets even sound indifferent
To my elusive sleep
And the stars wink at the cosmic joke
Of human fear
As the vastness of the dark
Swallows me up
My legs quake.
Now I lay me down to sleep.
You lay unaware of my need
My place beside you empty
Sheets cooling
A mere indentation of the bed.
No voices come to meet me
No arms to hold
No warm flesh to calm
Or excite...
Is this pain in my flesh
Or my soul, is it coming apart
Like my body has
Shredding and laying bare the nerves.
Come, the wide night sky,
And carry me away to dream again.
