Desk Lunch Part 2 D G Williford
She finished off the fish and more and threw the
cardboard box and plastic utensils into the
now infamous trashcan.
She dug in her overcrowded mess of a bag and
miraculously found the lip gloss that she was
looking for;Revlon Passion Punch.
She looked in her worn Mary Kay mirror and applied the gloss.
She noticed the pieces of fish and fries
stuck in her teeth so she reached for one of
her business cards.
“I knew these things were good for something.”
She smiled wide to get a good look.
Her boss came back from lunch so she quickly
minimized the internet sites she had open and
pretended to be engrossed in an Excel spreadsheet.
As soon as he was in his office, she
maximized the windows. She had to keep track of her
E-bay auctions, check her support groups, and
e-mail.
She looked at her keyboard. It was filthy.
Crumbs of food from every fast food joint in town lay there.
She picked it up and shook it to clear some of the mess.
There was at least a quarter inch of year
old crud living under the keys.
Trey came by. Trey worked in packaging, stood at all
of 5 feet and was about as wide. His breath always
smelled like ramen noodles and root beer.
His face was pocked, his hair was thinning and he had a crush on her.
“Hey!” He smiled. “I was wonderin’ if you already ate?
I was going out to the Burger Barn and I know how much you
like those double chili cheese burgers”.
He grinned, showing yellowed teeth.
She shuddered, looking away so as not
to completely show her revulsion.
“No thanks Trey. I had fish and more”.
She sighed and resumed staring at her monitor like
it was getting ready to broadcast a live feed from God.
He blushed and shuffled back to packaging.
She picked up a black and gray Papermate pen,
one of several that stayed on her desk at all times,
eventually to wind up in her bag or someone else’s.
It was time to earn her pitiful paycheck.
