Donkeys And Ice Cream Kate Kerrison
When I was a child we used to go to Woolacombe in Devon every year. We would stay in a bungalow called Glebelands in a little village called Georgeham.
I always loved staying at Glebelands because it was a bungalow and it was the only time I ever stayed in a house with no stairs. My brother John and I had a room each and mum and dad had the room at the front of the house.
In the lounge there was a piano and I had great fun even though I couldn’t play a note! What also fascinated me was that the sheet music was kept in the piano stool. The house had a side gate into the back garden and at the bottom of it where some fields belonging would be with their heads over the fence waiting for the farmer to come and milk and feed them.
The house had white pebble dashed walls that felt rough under my fingers and looked at knobbly. There were big rhododendrons on either side of the front door and were so large I felt like I might get lost in them.
Every day we went to the beach whatever the weather.
The car park at Woolacombe was a field at the top of a hill and we used to park the car there. We had a good system devised for carrying all our gear to the beach. Dad used to turn mums sun lounger upside down and open up the legs. Everything was packed onto the lounger and tied securely, not only to hold everything together but also to stop the lounger falling apart. Sitting on it was quite an art as mum had mended it on several occasions! By the end of it’s life I think the thread was the only thing holding it together.
We all had to carry something, usually a water container or several jumpers depending on age or infirmity. Then we would be off, marching down to the beach like a band of gypsies on their day off. It always seemed a long walk and we could end up miles down the beach or so it seemed.
I always remember that there was a white house on the cliff overlooking the beach. It had a balcony and every day there were wetsuits hanging out to dry, whatever time of day we happened to be there.
The other thing we always looked forward to was the donkey rides. After lunch we would walk down the beach looking for them and most days we found them. Of course we always found them and always had a ride.
We always had ice cream and the sun always shone, or it seemed to. But, there were times when we sat on the beach come hell or high water. Wrapped up in jumpers against a force ten gale of the North Sea, coming out of the sea in the raining and feeling warmer than when we went in.
We did go on day trips but usually only when it was wet because we didn’t want to waste the good days. When the sun shone we went on the beach and when it was time to go home we all said good-bye to the sea and promised to be back the next year. And we always were.
