Ends And Means
Colin Baker

The brilliantly gifted American political and moral theorist, John Rawls, argued that human beings must always be viewed as ends and everything else as means, the latter being fashioned and used (at least in theory) to maintain and promote human life and human progress. This of course seems like plain common sense because it is plain common sense.

And yet throughout the developed world, precisely the opposite takes place each and every day. Under conditions of advanced capitalism, based as it is on the ownership of private property and the buying and selling of commodities, the end good is necessarily realised by way of something one gets rather than something one does. Thus, all us human beings in the 'west' exist in this topsy turvy world in which most of us are used by a minority as means to pursue profit, while the things we make, along with the institutions we bring into being in order to maintain and develop this exploitative way of life, are all related to and conceptualised by us so uncritically, as ends in themselves. Why does this matter? It matters because such a state of affairs means that thinking, feeling human beings are necessarily subordinated to institutions and material artefacts of their own making which do neither. It's plain crazy!
