From the darkened room
They emerge,
Starved and yet
Starving still.
Their eyes,
Hollowed by their pain,
Are drawn
To light's sweet embrace.
Float it does
Over a dying window's sill
While it envelops
All that draws near.
Greedily,
Their eyes behold,
Forgotten beauty.
Trees,
As starved as they,
Scrape the waning sky.
But still,
They cannot look away.
For they are trapped
By light's captivity.
Somewhere
High above in the waning sky,
Hangs a single bird
With the freedom
For which they yearn.
With this last vision,
They are blinded
And dragged back
To eternity.
