Every Breath You Take Steven L Howard
What is our life but a vapor that appears for a short time, then is gone? Each day is a new and unique gift from God, and so for each day we have the three of you, we thank God.
Daphne, our oldest: Your quiet determination continues to be such a blessing. We love the confidence that has been gained as you continue to accomplish. Your beauty is far greater than you realize. You give my heart a thrill every time you call me from college and tell me “I love you, daddy.” I mean it when I answer “I love you too, sweetheart.”
Roni, our second: Although your beauty is recognized by all around you, you have such an enjoyable, down to earth attitude. We appreciate your determination, and passionate pursuit of your goals. We love to see you hit the ball, and we stand and cheer wildly every time you make one of those diving catches in clutch situations in the game. But our hearts are thrilled every time we are there just to see you take the field. Every day of your life you challenge us to keep up with you, but we thank God sincerely for your liveliness and your life. We want you to know that even if you never hit a ball, and even if you never took the field, you would still thrill us.
Nathanael, our only son: Your sisters came from our bodies, and you came from our heart. We pursued you passionately before you were born, and celebrated with abandon when we were told that your birth mother had chosen us to be your family. Despite being born outside our family, if God gives you the days you will be the only one who carries my name to the next generation. You let me be a little boy again as I play with you, and work with you to understand planets, rockets, trains, and tractors. As your name says, you are truly a “Gift from God”.
Our love for you cannot be expressed in one paragraph each. One short year ago, we would not have thought it so important to be sure every day that you know how much we love you, but the losses this last year have taught us so much. Now, we are not exaggerating when we say: For every breath you take, we thank God. May He continue to bless you, and continue to give you days on this earth.
