It is well documented throughout the world that New York City probably has one of the worst reputations for cleanliness and safety. In the last few years, crime has gone on a see-saw binge similar to an off again on again alcoholic but the situations that I have had to endure in recent weeks are just appalling and should be considered criminal acts of annoyance and punishable by a hefty fine and a minimum of thirty days jail time.
On the evening of October 7th, my boyfriend and I were returning home from a day of shopping and interviews when we were abruptly and quite rudely interrupted by two youths who desperately wanted to save their defunct basketball team. I was standing on the crowded number two train when they entered the car and began on their tyrant intrusion into our lives with their shameless begging.
One claimed his name was Anthony and the other said his name was Terrell. As soon as they entered the car, I knew that we were in for some trouble. Not that these boys were a threat or anything, but that they would do something to disturb an otherwise pleasantly exasperating ride home. Anthony, the assumed ring leader and older one in the bunch, started the pestering not one minute after he was in the car. From where I stood I heard his whole rant to the poor woman who was so tired she was dozing off on the train periodically waking to grab her pocket book and work bag before it hits the floor. This poor woman was being disturbed after what probably was a long day at the office but that didn’t stop captain hassle.
“Hello ma’am,” Anthony said while rudely throwing his face in hers, “My name is Anthony, I’m sorry to bother you but I am trying to raise money for my basketball team. It’s an after school program that was created for kids like me to keep us off the streets and give us something constructive to do.” When he knew that his words were falling on deaf and tired ears, Anthony decided that the entire train car should hear what he had to say.
“Excuse me ladies and gentlemen. My name is Anthony and I am here to try and raise money for my basketball team. It is a program that was created to keep kids like me off the streets after school and give us something constructive to do to stay out of trouble. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated. Something as little as a quarter would be a great help. Thank you.” What instantly struck me as odd about his rehearsed begging routine was his lowest bid was a quarter. Is he so proud that he would not take a nickel or a dime? I’m sure he isn’t.
His announcement was the kicker. That was my queue to pick something out of my bag or my pocket and pretend to read or appear busy at something and standing in a crowded train car with not much on me to occupy my time, that wasn’t an easy thing to do. I started to rummage through my laptop bag and all I came across was the new DVD I bought from Virgin Records. Since I could not find anything to read or listen to as these boys harassed the train for money, I pulled out the receipt from the DVD sale.
Wanting to seem as busy and annoyed as possible (and seeming annoyed wasn’t very hard) I began to read the receipt aloud as Anthony drew closer to me: “Virgin Records, One Hour Photo, sale price twenty-seven dollars and ninety five cents.” I repeated that as loudly as I could without seeming like a nut but at the same time appearing loud enough for Anthony to hear that I was busy. That didn’t stop this persistent pest from trying to weasel money out of me. What was I thinking? We are talking about a boy who was bold enough to wake a sleeping woman to beg, why would he not want to bother me if I was just reading a receipt?
As Anthony etched ever closer to me, I began to read louder and even clinched my already tired fists in hopes of he not approaching me at all. The moment of triumph had arrived and it was now my turn to be harassed by Anthony and his partner in nescience Terrell. I could feel the tension build up inside me as Anthony eyes his prey and made a B line straight for me.
Anthony placed his face around five inches away from mine and began his hopeless plea for spare change for his supposed basketball team. This youthful maniac was so close to my face that I could actually smell his breath on my nose and mouth. And it smelled of M&M’s, the very candy he was selling for one dollar. My first instinct was to yell at this guy to get out of my face but that was not an option for me. I just listened as he parlayed his little victim song and dance routine around my deaf ears. I really didn’t hear too much of it because as he was in the middle of his harassment, I noticed that a seat next to Ivy had emptied so I turned away from Anthony and headed for the seat to finally get some rest. Ever the persistent pest, Anthony followed me and continued to ask me about helping to fund his ridiculous cause. After stalking me to my seat and badgering me like no one else in the car, Anthony had finally given up on me.
Just a few moments after I was seated and comfortable, I saw Terrell stalk another woman as she made her way towards the door at the Grand Army Plaza stop in Brooklyn. The lady gave the motion that these kinds of people are trained to recognize, she placed her hand in her pocket while looking in their direction. Terrell (with the glazed look in his eye like a recovering drunk at a bottle of Vodka) made his way through four construction worker type men with hard hats and even a man with a mountain bike blocking half of the exit door to get to the woman who may have something to offer the boys.
With passionate desperation, Terrell jumped in between the closing doors of the train with the most pathetic attempt for free money I had ever seen. As the doors closed on him and the conductor announced that he was holding the train up, Terrell held his hand out and begged that the woman rush to the train and hand him the money she had in her hand. Eventually the woman came to her senses and left the platform. The boys then announced quite loudly their frustration with the failure and left the car. Onlookers looked at each other with joy that the pests were gone. I laid my head back and rested my eyes slowly drifting into the noisy, bumpy smoothness of the rest of the train ride home.
