Fire Fright
T J Rintoull

The frightening part about it all
Is nothing really matters
The fearful beast within
Only consuming the drama of the soul
As long as it will burn
Like flames chewing slowly
The soft flesh of freshly cut wood
And from this we learn
Staring at the coals
That nothing and everything can simply be
One and the same
All complete and utterly inconstant
It is this that stirs
The deep dirty dark place inside
Rattling the chains around the monster
Fire and light a less than delicate thredony
Music heard without a need for eardrums
The slick black hide glistens
Inner demons grin as others feed the flame
Delighting in their dance around demonic heart-fire
But elsewhere there is more
Within a deeper part of a twice-broken heart
I burn and dance alone
Purposefully and perpetually ignorant
Knowing nothing ever lingers
And all their foul fuel will one day melt away
The beast will starve and die
These demons pass into the world beyond
But the frightening part about it all
The thing that's truly scary
It never chilled me to the bone
Nor woke me in the night
The frightening part about it
Is it was never really frightening
At all
