Form A Vision To Success
E Rocco Caldwell

Good Afternoon,

I want to say it is my pleasure to be asked to speak to all of you concerning the late Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.

The song sung was entitled "Tomorrow" and is appropriate because I am here to speak about the future. Every future must have a beginning.

Doctor King was born January 15, 1929 and he died on his way to support striking sanitation workers in Memphis Tennessee April 14th 1968. The two events are no more than points in history to many of us as are your own births and eventual deaths; points in the history of humanity

But there are random events between the two points…as there were in the life of Doctor King:

- Receiving his PHD at Boston University February 1955
- Establishing the Southern Christian Leader Conference January 1957
- Gave the famous "I had a dream" speech in Washington DC August 28 1963
- Received the Nobel Peace Price December 1964

The things done in a life defines the person. What will the random events be in your life?

- Arrested on a felony February 2004
- Pregnant January 2006
- Graduated with honors June 2008
- Discovered the cure for AIDS May 2012
- Shot while evading police October 2013
- Teaching at Cedar crest September 2014

King believed in equal opportunity for all but those opportunities, fought for in places like Selma, Little Rock, Birmingham, Jackson, Boston, will not just materialize out of smoke but takes vision and effort. Doctor King gave up his life so that all of us, White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Native-American can have events in our lives that are productive, meaningful and positive not just for now but for generations to come.

As a Pastor I have seen both success and failure in the lives of people I have met over the years. Vision was always the contributing factor. They either lacked one or had one. The Bible says that the people die from lack of a vision.

What is your vision? What is your tomorrow?

Doctor King's vision was well defined in his I had a dream speech. It spoke of equal opportunities, unity and freedom from hate and indifference. He aspired to make that vision come true and in many aspects it has, all of you can have visions and success!

What is your vision…what is your tomorrow? Is it one worth having?

-Rap star
- Professional athlete
-Doctor
-Lawyer
-Teacher
-Wendy's worker
-aerospace engineer
-Union Rep
-criminal
-Thug…i.e. gangta!

A vision takes you to a place…the lack of one ends you in a place!

I recall when I was eight years old (so far back it hurts my mind) I was sitting in a tree eating ice-cream sandwiches. It was a warm Spring Saturday in Edgewood Maryland. I could see the tar rooftop of my elementary school. Overhead against the powdered sky drifted clouds and I recall the song Both Side Now by Joni Mitchell. I didn't know then but time was passing me by. Time was steadily moving around me like waves off the bow of a ship. All I could think of at the time was the ice-cream and the clouds and that I would be eight years old forever. Doctor King would be killed later that year and I would see the unhappiness and frustration of black people erupt in Newark New Jersey the next year and a lifetime of months and days and weeks for the next thirty years would past by me.

Time is steadily moving past you even now. You can't see it but it is. What I did over thirty years ago, sitting in that tree eating ice cream, is now just a memory because that's what time does to things…make them into memories. Without a vision…without a goal in life…time will drift around you and events will change as you will change but your life will just end up somewhere. Don't just end up somewhere…go somewhere!

Doctor King was shot on his way to a union rally. I found this interesting that the Civil Rights movement of the sixties was a workers' right movement. The right to a good paying job and the rights to a safety workplace were all a part of Doctor King's vision of living the American Dream. But mainly his dream was about the hope that all children no matter their color will have the rights to achieve their dreams and become whatever they can dream!

Again I ask you what your dreams are. What are you doing to achieve them? So a person thinks (envisions) so that person will become!

Thank you.
