"Deborah “And you will say at a woman took the city” “Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.” Proverbs 31:30 Read Judges: When I was a little girl I remember watching Wonder Woman. Somewhat like Superman but more feminine. Changing into her custom at the hint of danger; fighting evil for the sake of justice but she was make believe. Then I heard of a woman who did not change into spandex; a woman that was real, who took an entire city in the presence of a cruel ruler. Deborah was a prophetess and a judge in Israel; who interceded for a nation for a word from the Lord. Prior to her heroic act the people had cried out to the Lord for help and He sent a hero to save them. Ehud, a real super man, who through God’s favor killed a king and delivered the nation. What awesome deeds but just like new cars, homes and boy/girlfriends after a while we stop appreciating it as much. Getting lapse on the promises we made to get them. Just as Israel because when Ehud died, the people began again to sin against the Lord. The commandments hadn’t changed so it isn’t hard to picture what they were doing. Sex had to be into play because it is touted as the oldest profession in history. There was a distorted belief during that time and some synagogues had temple prostitutes. Idols also, pictures, statues (wood, glass, iron, etc.) and people who they began to look to for life information (seers, friends, the Jones’, anyone other than God). There were also a host of other manmade gods who people believed in for victory in war, harvest, fertility and luck. So nowadays the modifications are simple: Sin in essence meaning your heart has turned away from God. Seeking ones own way without checking with the hand that spins the universe. The commandments haven’t changed for us either and sin is when a person puts anything other than God (who is a jealous God) before Him. The only true difference between biblical times and modern times is it is conceived we have more time to amend our ways before we have to pay for them. That is far from the truth. The reality is God has sent prophets, priest, heroic men and women, children, babies, His son to say this is the better way. The greater truth is He pricks the hearts of millions of Deborah’s in our time when men and women have become lovers of themselves, taking heed to the bibles instruction of handling such sinful times: “Remember that there will be difficult times in the last days. People will be selfish, greedy, boastful and conceited; they will be insulting, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful and irreligious, they will be unkind, merciless, slanderers, violent and fierce, they will hate the good, they will be treacherous, reckless, and swollen with pride; they will love pleasure rather than God; they will hold the outward form of our religion but reject the real power (God)”. 2 Timothy 2:1-5 In Act 21:9 the scripture speaks of a man, Philip an evangelist in Caesarea among with six other evangelists. He had four daughters who were pure (virgins) and did prophecy. So it is was no more uncommon in their time than in ours. A heart for God that seeks out will hear the thundering voice of an Awesome God. These Deborah’s fall to their knees and intercede; praying also for a word from the Lord; to deliver His people and their nations. They are what keep the spiritual and natural world in balance. Praying not just for family and friends but as 1 Timothy 1:8-10 instructs: not for good people but law breakers and criminals, for the godless and sinful, for those who are not religious or spiritual, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murders, for the immoral, for sexual perverts, for kidnappers, for those who lie and give false testimony or who do anything contrary to sound doctrine. For those with kindred spirits it’s not hard to understand the courage it took to be the first woman in history to a take a city. The modern day Deborah has an inherit strength: single parent moms, double shifts, growing needs, bills and daycare but if her child needs her with dish pan hands she comes running (superwoman qualities). Spiritually let’s examine Deborah’s story a little further to pull more wisdom. Respected by all who knew her; with a heart for God this woman would reshape the politics and social foundations of Israel. The wife of Lappidoth she served as a prophetess holding sessions under a certain palm tree (biblically symbolic to victory in Christ) between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim. Socially she would be known by all, I can hear someone who felt wronged, “Well I will just take it to Deborah!” They Deborah knew better; Deborah sought the Lord. In that time as a result of Israel’s disobedience the Lord let them be conquered by Jabin, a Canaanite king who ruled the city of Hazor. The king was ruthless; his commander, Sisera, was in charge of 900 iron chariots that he willed with extreme cruelty and violence. As a result of this the Israelites hearts were once again turned in repentance and they sought help from the Lord. The just judge did not call the entire nation when she received heavenly instruction; choosing rather to send for Barak, a man of valor. “The Lord, the God of Israel, has given you this command: “Take ten thousand men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them to Mount Tabor. I will bring Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, to fight you at the Kishon River, He will have his chariots and soldiers but I will give you victory over him.” That would be the news the nation was waiting to hear. Another move of God, another person with the heart for God to save their nation from oppression. But Barak’s reply was not strong and valiant; instead almost childish: “I’ll go if you go with me but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go either.” Wow! I can imagine her shock; Barak had gained so much favor from God that he was being given the right to participate in a fixed fight. His name would be in everyone’s mouth: “All hale Barak!” The prophetess must have known that God uses people who fear Him (so much so sometimes they as Moses need encouraging). “Alright,” she answered, “I will go with you, but you won’t get any credit for the victory, because the Lord will hand Sisera over to a woman.” The two left to rally the troops at Kadesh; Barak’s call netted 10,000 men. Sisera hears of the troops on the move to Mount Tabor and he and his 900 chariots and soldiers go to Kishon River to overtake them. I picture as their eyes locked (the opposing armies) Deborah instructs Barak: “Go! The Lord is leading you! Today he has given you victory over Sisera.” When Barak attacked the Lord led the enemy in confusion sending its commander running on foot and no other man alive. The wheels of history begin to shift; another woman’s destiny will assist Israel’s triumph. Prior to the battle Heber (a descendant of Hobab, the brother n law of Moses) had moved his family (wife) away from his people (Kenites) and pitched a tent at Kadesh by an oak tree. During the fight he had gone away leaving his wife Jael (tent) home alone. Sisera would escape to Heber’s tent seeking safety. He knew his king, Jabin, was friends with Heber’s family. Self assured he had found safety Sisera exhausted from the battle fell asleep. But Jael did not sympathize as she had first pretended; taking a peg from her tent to kill him. When Barak’s search came close to her vicinity she led him to see his defeated foe. “Come here, I’ll show you the man you’re looking for!” Jael shouted. Just as God said, Israel had been delivered. The nation would enjoy that peace for 40 years. The headline reading something that would make little Deborah’s everywhere, in that time and ours, dare to dream: “First woman in (Superwoman) takes a city!” Journal some of your victories through faith and prayer either in agreement with someone else or interceding where God showed up in your life and showed out. We call those fixed fights. David with his men went to fight and when they returned their camp had been plundered. Women and children taken. The men were in so much hysteria that David grabbed the Ephod, Jewish vest representing the twelve tribes of Israel with stones, and beseeched the throne of God, ‘Will we recover all?,’ he asked God. Yes his Maker told him you will recover all! That is a fixed fight; knowing it may be rough but the outcome is you win because it is fixed…it was never your. The odds are in your favor because of who covers and sends. Whether walking through or outside of a testimony (priceless produce of a test).
