Mom of 4, knowing in life things like these cannot be made up. [July 2006]
Graduation Day To Remember Teresa Mizgala
My daughter graduated from this year. The last of my four babies to finish High School.
The week had been so busy with all the planning and commitments to Open House & Graduation, that I don't think the reality of the situation had soaked in.
My husband , daughter and I were scurring around in the house trying to get things together to leave for the school. She asked me to help dry her hair while I was getting out of the shower ...my husband is asking can he wear his Scooby Doo shirt mumbling that in his opinion it is a casual shirt. Being a Mom , I was able to accomodate them , as all Moms do ...we fix things and/or make things right.
As I tried to put on my make-up ...the humidity was horrible and I wondered if anyone would even notice if I didnt wear any at all! Yep ...probably would. I searched my make-up basket for the eyeliner ...not there....I yelled out to my daughter, "Where is my eyeliner, the one I just bought ?" "I dont know ,"she replied. Typical answer....yea my eyeliner just grew legs and walked right out of the house...just left! I made do with another liner that I did not like...it was the reason for the new eyeliner I had bought. Oh well, hope my eyeliner has a happy life. Moving on to the next thing...mascara....I again yell at my daughter again, "I know this will sound very dumb on my part but do you have an inkling as to where my mascara might be? " "No , Mom ," she answered. "Not a problem," I said. "Maybe I will run an ad in the paper for Lost and Found-make-up and offer a reward, either that or we need to get in touch with Ripley's Believe It or Not 'cause my stuff always grows legs and walking off , " I mumbled. The sounds of hair dryers going, phone ringing, searching for 2 bobby pins, and a husband again saying the Scooby doo shirt is a casual shirt to wear. At this point my make-up is melting and I am upset because I know where I leave my make-up. It is now time to leave and I can see my daughter is on the phone. I look at her and say, "Get off the phone so we can go, unless that is someone with information on the whereabouts of my make-up," and I turn to my husband and say, "Oh, put on the dang Scooby doo shirt and lets go" (as he smiles)."
We get to the school and the place is so crowded. Suddenly, I feel a "Power Surge" coming on ! We find seats in the bleachers and utilize the printed programs as fans. Hubby occasionally fanning me at times because he is just happy he got to wear his shirt! He is all about comfort when it comes to clothing.
Watching the graduates shuffle around to get into places, I am still upset at the make-up ordeal...telling myself....I will buy my own make-up kit AGAIN....one with a lock and put it up so when I get ready to use it, all my stuff will be there.
The graduates now take their seats and Student Council comes on stage. Commencement begins and a Power Point show has been prepared for the audience. Lights go dim and it begins. They have put together a child photo and a graduate photo of all students, and in between photos that student will say something to the audience about what they have learned. I thought this was different but nice after hearing 10 or more students and seeing their photos.
At the screen we now see a picture I had made when she was 2 months old of me holding/cradling her looking down at her, as my daughter speaks, "What I have learned in my life I learned from my Mom ...the most wonderful individual I know. She has taught me to communicate with others and be fair with trying to see both sides of a situation , not to judge. She taught me that God was first and priortize everything else. She has shown me to love myself and to forgive others and that saying I'm sorry is sometimes a good thing, and that "Can't" is NOT a word. Her favorite saying is, "Nobody died...it can be fixed." I sincerely hope I can be half the woman my mother is and hope she will be as proud of me as I am of her. And Mom, ....I found your mascara & eyeliner you were looking for...it was in my purse." At that time a picture of one of her graduation pictures flips on the screen.
Okay, at this point every bit of makeup had rolled off my face and I had used up all the tissue in my purse. Not noticing I had started wiping my nose on my husbands Scooby doo shirt!!! Looking around , I do not think there was a dry eye in the gymnasium. The rest of the program was great. Afterwards I hugged my daughter and told her how proud I am of her. In my eyes she is something else and I am so very proud of the young woman she has become. We plan on taking a small trip soon...Just us girls!
In the store the next day I had the opportunity to buy my own make-up case... I smiled and walked away from it.
