Importance Of The First Amendment
Jordan Holetzky

All the Amendments in the Constitution are important. But I am going to discuss the importance of the First Amendment. The Constitution was first written September 17, 1787, it was then ratified March 4, 1789. Then the Bill of Rights was ratified December 15, 1791.

    The First Amendment

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

So it gives us the freedom of speech. We have the right to express our thoughts and opinions. To say if we like one of the politicians or if we like what’s going on in our country. Even if we don’t realize it we are very lucky to have this right because in some countries they are killed for expressing their opinions or disagreeing with authority such as the leaders in their land.

The First Amendment allows us to follow our own religion. This allows you to believe in whatever you want or if you don’t want to believe in anything you don’t have too. In other countries, you have to believe in a certain religion if you don’t want to be killed or persecuted. This right is very important to me because I am able to practice Christianity.

Next, it gives you the freedom of press. Meaning you can write or publish any news or basically you can write anything you want as long as you are not knowingly writing lies about someone or things.

Lastly, you have the freedom or assembly. This allows you to have town meetings or a protest as long as you do it right and a riot doesn’t break out. This is also important.

Obviously, you can see what rights the First Amendment protects. You can also see why it is important and how it is utilized everyday.

"Nicely expressed, Jordan. There are many people including some Supreme Court justices, who need a civics refresher course. Note, nowhere in that first paragraph is the "separation of churh and state" mentioned. Many people like to interpret the pharse "Copngress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion" to mean a toal separation of symbols and even prayer from all public institutions. This is not what this amendment states. Permitting religious symbols in and around public buildings as well as voluntary prayer in public classrooms does not constitute "establishing a religion." There are no laws forcing anyone to recognize any religion. If the majority of people are of Christian faith, it is quite natural that they would want to see symbols of their faith displayed at Christmas, and Easter holidays. How can this be offensive, even if you're an atheist? " -- Richard.
