Kirby & I Branson Storm
It’s late,
four in the morning.
The earth’s surface has cooled
and the stars are on fire in a swollen sky
bound only by our fall into morning.
I can’t sleep.
It’s because I don’t want to.
I wonder,
is there a difference between
being asleep
or
being dead?
I stir in the yellow crunch of Cottonwood leaves
with my intrepid Siamese, Kirby.
We step about in the darkness
like curious children,
like ghosts,
like souls without salvation,
like fire lit Apache dances by the forgotten stream.
There are more creatures out here,
wets on the run,
mares fixed in the pastures,
sleeping viboras with dormant rattles
and sun dried bones of pioneer ghosts
rotting in the cold.
We can see some of them beneath the starlight.
The others just listen
and watch us like peeping phantoms.
