Like A Hot Knife Through Butter Rae
Do you know what it feels like to have pain as heavy as bricks pull at your heart every night? You say you do, but that was only a couple times. That was when your fiance dumped you and your grandmother died. Imagine her dying every night. Imagine yourself dying every night.
Do you slice open your flesh when you're sad? It's instinctive, isn't it? A long time ago you forgot how to cry, so you bled instead.
But it's not only then.
When you're bored.
When you're angry.
When you're nervous.
When you can't sleep, you pull out the razor.
Some call you compulsive. Others think you're stupid. Others are horrified by the ragged exterior that could once effectively be called your skin.
So you bottle it up. You say that nothing is wrong until you're found with a darling river of blood flowing down the length of your arm and twisting around your wrist.
The pain has always been this obvious, hasn't it?
"Nothing is wrong." It slips off your tongue just as easily as the metal slid
like a hot knife through butter.
How poetic it had looked. The scarlet against your pale, pale skin. You close your ears to the screams. The screams sliding from your throat, so desperate to be alone. Nothing is wrong.
Leave you be?
Isn't that just the thing you're upset about?
How it must have looked, so much blood.
It will go unnoticed tonight that you heard them hope you'd hang yourself. Oh how many burdens would then be lifted? Their poor shoulders, bearing so much weight.
It will go unnoticed that you have this pain.
Tonight your only role is that of the coward. The hider. The insufferable cutter.
Leave you be
In your misery.
And as you hide
You'll let it slide...
