ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I'm thirty nine, recently single again. I have two boys Cli' (pronounced clee) Real name Christopher and Mark. I'm a care in the community nurse and formerly (when I was married) an occupational Therapist working with the mentally ill on a secure unit. I love reading and writing and meeting people. I hate offal, seafood and intolerance. I keep dog, cat, polecats, rats and reptiles. And for seven years ran the second largest reptile sanctuary in Britain. Apart from having my lads, I think that's probably the most worthwhile thing I've ever done. Writing wise, I've been the main fiction writer for Legends magazine for three years. And have two books published 'Lizard's Leap' published by Quillusers, and 'Better the Devil You Know' soon to be released by Bestbooks.Um I drive a knackered old Astra, and ride a two litre trike. I live in the lake district of England, and am happy. :-)

Madness Becomes You
Sue (Sooz) Simpson

Madness Becomes You

Madness becomes you.

It goes with the slight smell of burning from the latest session of electric shock
treatments. It goes with your faded frontal lobotomy scar cleverly hidden by an extended
fringe of wiry hair, hair that has become frizzed by electricity and drugs.

Your madness lies dormant for the moment, but always tensed and ready to pounce.
Lurking behind glazed eyes that stare fixedly ahead, as a thin line of spittle oozes out of a
slack lipless mouth to trickle unhindered down your chin.

Your mouth a gaping maw of nothing, as the lips have long since been chewed away.
Your beautiful white teeth removed to save you the torment of eating away more of your
poor abused self. Your lips have gone but they have left hard rippled scar tissue where a
pert and pouting mouth had once called men to sample it’s softness.

Madness becomes you.

It goes with the smell of stale urine wafting from unclean underwear. It goes with the
faeces clinging to the stubs that twitch on your hands. Where were the fingers that once
had long talonous nails painted bright red? Fingertips that would stroke and tantalise with
their caress? The nails have long since been bitten to the quick, but you didn’t stop there.
No. The fingers have been chewed away over the years of insanity until only gnarled
stumps remain.

Madness becomes you.

It goes with the jumbled, irrational thoughts that trample through your deranged mind.
With the foul inappropriate words that you take such a delight in screeching in the dead of
night. In suits the words you mumble and the nursery rhymes you chant. You remember
what it was like to be ‘normal’, to be beautiful and charming and wanted. You
remember, and the memories of your sanity complement the madness to perfection. You
were so lovely before the days of straight jackets and crisp white linen. Before the days of
incontinence pads and bedbaths under heavy sedation. Before the days of insanity.

She turned slowly from the mirror. Turned form a reflection with a chequered illusion. The
checks that sectioned her face into sixty-four squares formed by a wire cage fixed over the
mirror for her own protection. Her movements are sluggish and unsure as she recoiled
from her tortured image through a haze of sedation. She sang mournfully “Madness
becomes you, it goes with your hair” and then cackled maniacally to herself as she sat on
the bed and began to rock monotonously backwards and forwards.

DISCLAIMER: STORYMANIA DOES NOT PROVIDE AND IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWS. ALL REVIEWS ARE PROVIDED BY NON-ASSOCIATED VISITORS, REGARDLESS OF THE WAY THEY CALL THEMSELVES.

"Though the story hinges on the description of the mad women, and this is grotesque and well written, it would have been more compelling if a story of how she got into her situation was weaved into the description of the character. " -- Sally Field.
"Hiya Sally, Yes I could have gone on and on with this one, but I've often been accused of waffleing on too long, so I like to have a mix of longer and shorter pieces. At the time I thought that this one could have benefitted rom some history, but managed to hold its own without it. I suppose her story isn't so uncommon. I see her as being used and abused by a string of men who didn't deserve her, maybe she liked a drop too much whiskey in the morning before breakfast, or maybe one day a little bit of her brain went on holiday and she turned overnight. you decide :-) " -- Sooz, Dalton-in-Furness, England, Cumbria.
"Archmage Darksphere’s Review: Its kinda...scary. :( *shudders and tries to set mind on doing homework* " -- Cam Davis.
"It's terrifying because some people are locked into just that kind of life with no way out. I hope I wrote her well because she deservees to be told. http://members.lycos.co.uk/suesimpson/ " -- Sooz, Dalton-in-Furness, England, Cumbria.
