Media Commentary And Invitation To A Different Life Joseph Albrecht
In a recent Mother Earth News article, Media Executive and Rancher, Bryan Welch, writes about a community in Texas that lives the life many just talk about. "The members of the Homestead Heritage religious community branch outside of Waco, Texas farm with draft animals, grow their own food, make their own clothes and build each other's barns", Welch writes. Initially, this was a project of "a small inner-city mission in New York City, whose members wanted to be more connected to their neighbors and to nature." Mother Earth News collaborates with the Homestead Heritage community through a course called "The Ploughshare Institute for Sustainable Culture at fairs by Mother Earth News. These courses teach people "how to make cheese, build harnesses, and create their own dishes and furniture." Other activities include "beekeeping, organic gardening, blacksmithing, woodworking and soap-making." Young and old work alongside each other on their 510 acre plot, teaching their practices to those willing to learn. Their website is www.SustainLife.org.
Why should those who protest current governmental practices live like this? A life of 100% self-sufficiency means 0% dependent on corporations. The Monsantos, Exxons, DuPonts, Nikes and their ilk survive through a steady stream of profit. A life such as this cuts off this profit, clotting the system at its heart. There are different degrees to which people feel comfortable living, and I myself will unlikely be like Homestead Heritage entirely. I garden, chop wood, buy American, drive an efficient car and try to live simply without modern luxuries. I try to remain in-tune with nature's calling, and will hopefully provide most things for myself. There is much to be said however, about a determined group of people who immerse themselves in a life of simplicity and sustainability. My salute goes out to them.
