Memoirs From The Thanksgiving Season

My grandmother has always played a big part in my past Thanksgivings. Every year she would slave away to prepare the perfect turkey to satisfy our eager appetites. The turkey, like always, was the most important part, and my grandma tried very hard to make it absolutely perfect. She was used to cooking for a big crowd. Every night she would cook supper for 10 people, so we all knew she could handle it. One of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving weekend was Grandparent’s Day at my school. Every year, on the day before Thanksgiving, the whole school would put on a show for the grandparents. It would consist of musical performances, dances, and funny skits. It was always held in the gym, and there was always a reception after it. I looked forward to it every year because I always had such a blast. Now my school doesn’t do the performances anymore, for some reason, and the last year we had it that way was when I was in the 2nd grade. I don’t remember much about what my classes did for the performances but what I do remember is that we sang a song every year. In kindergarten, my class sang, “It’s Not Easy Being Green” by Kermit the Frog. I loved that song so much that I sang it through out all of Thanksgiving Day. That’s the only song I remember singing. Another thing I loved about this day was that I’d always walk home with my grandma who lived only 10 minutes away (on foot). I’d ask her questions like, “Can I see the frozen turkey for tomorrow?” or “What kind of food are we going to have? Are we going to have mashed potatoes this year? Are you going to watch the parade tomorrow?” I drilled my grandmother with questions, and she answered them just as quick, never missing a beat. Now that I look back on it, I feel sorry for the poor old woman for having to put up with that. I always wanted my grandpa to come to Grandparent’s Day too, but he always had to work, which was understandable since he ran his own business. He made it up after he retired though, because then he came to Grandparent’s Day every single year. Even though many things have changed in my life, especially in recent years, I still look forward to Grandparent’s Day (now known as Special Person’s Day), and I still look forward to seeing my grandmother’s shining face when I spot her in the crowd of other people’s grandparents. I hope she will come again this year, and every year after that. After all, it is, and always will be a tradition.
