Moments To Remember
T J Rintoull

Will it be this kiss?

Will this at last be love, as you trace my lips with your velvet-covered fingers?

Your movements are slow, almost tremulous, as gloved nails touch my skin, these lips eagerly parting ever so slightly to wrap around soft downy material, teeth cutting down with practised ease, pulling and tugging the cover from your milky skin. Your quiet, shy giggle is less of amusement than genuine affection, and I know for certain, staring into your ocean eyes, that I will treasure this moment eternally, regardless of the outcome.

Questions bounce unbidden through the shadows of my mind, doing their ill-gotten best to deter me from your intent. I wonder momentarily if sobriety might have changed this meeting of skin and souls; might we in a better mind have walked away, thinking only sterile thoughts?

You push away my doubts like dust from a globe, forcing your body against me. Your bare skin brushes mine, ivory softness gliding across my face. I know now there can be no other option, and to turn away would be a crime against all I know in my heart to be right and true.

To look away from the light of real love is always a crime, no matter the fleeting nature of its course. I cannot choose a coward’s demise, not in conflict, and certainly not in a moment of pure and unadulterated beauty, a time of throbbing heartbeats and instinctive, sexual and spiritual perfection.

You put your lips to mine, pressing gently. I step into you, raising my arms around the soft seams of your dress, and trail a finger up your naked spine. You shiver almost imperceptibly, and this kiss takes on a new and ferocious life of its own, our lips dancing quietly against dim candlelight. My tongue flicks out across the arch of your mouth, and your desire takes it in without question.

You smell faintly of cigarettes and wine, but I know they’re not of your consumption. Your taste is delicate, fragrant, human, and I am certain you are everything I’ve ever wanted. You pull away, our lips breaking their embrace, and lock your gaze with mine. A new dance begins, your liquid blue stare breaking down the walls of my heart, and returning our eyes to their intended purpose. As I stare down your pupils into the home of your soul, I am reminded how similar the colour of your windows are to my own.

I know now I can no longer deny you, nor can I deny the path we’ve begun to walk. I’m tired of being jaded, tired of looking over every shoulder for a new heartache; sick to death of running. Until this moment, right here right now, I’d been running for what seemed like an eternity. Sailing across the ocean of life, lost and lonely and alone. Now, finding you in this dim place, our eyes mixing and rejoicing, your hands in mine and your breath in my lungs, I cannot be anything but yours.

This moment is my treasure; this moment is my forever – this moment is my undoing and my salvation. I tell you I’m ready, that I will give you my all and everything, that I will not resist and certainly not put up a fight; for you, anything. Your smile is pure, radiant, and forgiving. You understand, your soul is akin to mine. You tell me silently as our tongues writhe again together in a serpentine embrace that our moments are eternal, unsullied and indestructible.

Now it’s me pulling away. I nod, and you give me that smile again. We both know it’s time, and I am ready. The shot is silent, the powder on your lips anaesthetic for the pain. You know I’ve already suffered enough, and any more is undeserved. I am glad for you, for your arrival before any other, for the divine mercy you bestow in your infinite and magnificent malignance.

In another second, it’s over. I slump to the floor, and your smile fades to distant regret.

You walk away slowly, and know not to worry. We’ll always have this moment to remember.
