My Parents Have The Mania Ulysses Hero
'It was the drum, drum, drum which woke me. I stood on the landing, the lights were on, in the dinning room stood dad in front of him mum. They did not hold or touch, but moved in a jig like motion sweating profusely with a mirror like itch; both rubbed an invisible tree a consuming effort to relieve their madness.
It was a strange calamity to watch: balanced on heels, toes in awe of the ceiling with elbows not knowing what to do; neither hummed nor sang a tune, but mentioned an irrelevant creature which brought a mutual raise of an eyebrow, as if to encourage laughter.
The music stopped, just for a moment until father wound up the gramophone, adding in a strange and guttural tone, 'Hay baby! Yeah baby! Kick off yer shoes and paint the room.' But they had no shoes on, the room was already papered and I liked it the way it was.
I shuffled back to bed wondering, would I get the day off school if beetles carry diseases!'
