Oh Shit
D Donely

"Oh, I hate doing this." I watched as one of my best friends, Brittney, began to grind up an asprin pill into powder. I rolled my eyes. That's what she always said. "Umm..well..why do you do it then?" I asked, eyeing her as she began to form the fine white powder into a thin line. She shrugged. "I dunno...I just...do..". I nodded. Great answer, I thought sarcastically. She began to sift through her purse and found a pen. She took it apart and held the barrel to her nose. She glanced up at me, a mix of eagerness and regret in her eyes. Then she put the barrel to the powder line and inhaled quickly. The pen fell to the floor and she burried her head in her hands, sniffing wildly. "Brit, Brit, Brit" I said in the same tone a mother would use when scolding a naughty child. She looked up, "What?..sniff...it's not...sniff..that bad...sniff". Her eyes had turned blood shot and were watering non stop. "Right...I guess that explains why you look like shit then, huh?". She mopped at her face and began to clean up her little drug dealing area. "Sure you don't wanna have a go? "She asked, glancing at me, pen barrel poised above her bag. "um.....tempting..but.....no. I'm not THAT stupid." She shrugged and dropped the pen into her purse, along with her powderless compact, which she used to store (and hide) her pills.

I glanced at the clock, which read 11:30 pm. Brit followed my gaze and frowned. "Dude, this sucks. I wanna go to his party so bad!!If I could just get a ride...." She glanced angrily at the phone and fell back onto the bed, sighing loudly. "Damn it..damn it...I wish I could get a hold of somebody..but I guess everyone's at his party by now.Can you think of anyone else?" She looked at me eagerly, as she often did when she had a problem. It seemed she assumed I had the answer for everything and could fix anything with a snap of my fingers. I racked my brain, and felt a migraine coming on. Funny, I seemed to always get those when I was around Brittney..." dude, I dunno, sorry. You could....ride the nun nun over there." I offered, grinning. She sighed in annoyance and rolled her head back to stare at me. "First of all, there's no way I'm riding the four wheeler 20 something miles. Second of all, it's out of gas. And thirdly, it's over at my house. If my parents found out...well, I'd be better off dead." She closed her eyes and pulled at her dirty blonde hair. " And NO, I'm NOT going to walk or hitch hike!" She exclaimed, surpising me. I had just been about to suggest that. " Man, they were gonna have like 4 kegs of beer...and weed...and hookahs of course. Well..I don't know, Becky" She said in a defeated voice, much unlike her usual "nothing can stop me" tone.

"I hate the taste of these. And they stink too." I watched in boredom as Brit put a cigarette to her lips. I glanced around at the night that surrounded my front porch. " Well then, why do you even bother smoking?" I asked her, out of habit. We had had this same conversation many times before. She shrugged, not meeting my testing gaze. "I just..do.." Her attention focused upon a street lamp that had just gone out, casting the area around it in shadow. I sighed, inhaling the smoke that rose. "Well...I like the buzz it gives me, you know? It's kind of like how good YOU feel when you drink your coffee. It makes you feel better, right?" She said, after a minute. "Ya..I guess..but, I'm not addicted..like..you." She flicked the ashes off into the grass." I'm NOT addicted, I could stop if I wanted to." She said, in a defiant tone. "Umm..right..sure. I guess that explains why you almost had a break down when you went two days without one. Or how you were so desperate for a smoke that one night, that you walked down the road looking for used cigarettes, right?" I asked lightly, smirking when she didn't answer. She tossed the butt into the ground and turned to me. "Wanna go for another midnight walk? We might as well, since I'm obviously not going to the party.." She grumbled, leading the way through my yard.

I fell into step beside her, just as the street lamp came back on again. What's with that stupid thing? I wondered staring up at it. We stood at the end of my driveway. Brittney shifted her eyes in all directions. "If my parents were to drive by...well..they'd sure be pissed to find us standing here." I watched as a car pulled to the end of the neighborhood road directly in front of us. It sat there for a few seconds, and then, without warning, pulled into my driveway. I blinked in surprise, wondering who the hell this person was. I figured that it was just some drunk trying to pick us up. But, when I looked at Brit, she was frozen. "Brittney, what do you think you're doing?" The coldness and tone of the voice rooted me to the spot. Uh oh, I know that voice..."Um..hi mom, hi dad...we were just..going for a walk."Brit said, in a most unconvincing tone. "Ya, it's true..right Becky?" She turned to me, naked panic in her eyes. "um...ya, ya, we were bored..and it was hot in the house, so....we..um, thought we'd go for a stroll." My voice quavered and I shifted my eyes away from the car window. Brit and I exchanged mirrored looks that radiated "Oh shit."
