The house was dark and cold
When the shilling went
Dad wouldn’t be back till half past ten
But even then
He might have to save for the rent
He could have been skint
We just didn’t know
It was great when the gas man came
To empty the meter
Dad would get his rebate in shillings
Along with the h’apennies
That he had used in desperation
The gas man would smile
And we would get a chippy for tea
One day my Mum walked out
While we were having Sunday dinner
Dad didn’t seem to believe it
But he did soon enough
She was leaving
Things were never the same again
We just didn’t know
Not long after my dad had a stroke
He was sent home from work
He wasn’t due home till half past ten
I had skipped school
He had a tiny bit of blood in the corner of his mouth
It seems he fell
I just didn’t know
My Dad was an intelligent man
But the loneliness hit him
I spotted him sitting with tramps on the bus station
In sheer desperation for company
The stroke had taken most of his speech
But not his mind
I just didn’t know
My Dad died of a broken heart
He really did try his best
I wasn’t there when he passed way
A telegram was all I had
Things had moved on and there was so much to say
Too late now though
I just didn’t know
